Marcquise Reed and
Shelton Mitchell will return for their final season of eligibility in the 2018-19 season.
The duo had announced in April they were declaring for the NBA draft but left the door open to return by not signing with an agent. The deadline for college athletes to announce their final pro decision was today. “I’m thrilled that both Shelton and Marcquise decided to finish their careers at Clemson after both earned undergraduate degrees this spring,” said Clemson coach Brad Brownell via news release Wednesday. “They are extremely talented players who play well together and should give us one of the better backcourts in the ACC. I’m counting on Shelton, Marcquise and Elijah Thomas to lead this group and build on the momentum of our Sweet 16 run last season.” Reed, a former Robert Morris transfer, was named All-ACC after averaging 16.4 points per game in the regular season. He finished with a team-best 15.8 points and 1.7 steals per game in the Tigers’ Sweet 16 run, among the team leaders also in free throw percentage (84.5) and 3-pointers (67). Mitchell, a former Vanderbilt transfer, averaged 12 points with a team-leading 85.7 free throw percentage and 3.6 assists per game last season. The duo’s return combines with Thomas for three starters with at least 30 starts back for 2018-19. By transfer or declaring pro, Clemson had lost two scholarship players previously who had eligibility remaining from the 2017-18 season (David Skara and Scott Spencer) to go with three seniors graduating in Gabe DeVoe, Donte Grantham and Mark Donnal. Clemson was ranked No. 24 in the CBS 'Too Early' rankings this week for 2018-19. Brad Brownell now has four of his five starters back from this past season's team that reached the Sweet 16. Tigers should again be a Top 25 squad in 18-19. The boys are back in town ! ??
