Swinney says Tigers planning to redshirt TE

by -

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said on his call-in show Monday that they are trying to redshirt freshman tight end Jaelyn Lay.

Lay has played three of the four games he can play before a redshirt and has one catch for 20 yards in 33 snaps.

"He's a guy we're going to try to hold if we can," Swinney said, promising that Lay will see at least one more game this season. "We've kept Lay with us. He's practiced and he's repping and he's traveling with us because we've got to have him ready to play if something happens...We're keeping Lay ready and we're going to hold him if we can."

Lay is a former 4-star prospect, who was rated as the No. 3 TE nationally by Rivals.

Swinney mentioned one reason they could hold Lay is the fact that suspended tight end Braden Galloway can return for postseason action. The Tigers head coach also noted that former walk-on Luke Price has emerged to solidify a role this season.
