Good Head Coaches?
Dec 8, 2023, 10:15 AM

How many good head coaches are there out there now?
There are 4 dudes who are current head coaches who have Natty hardware:
-Nick Saban -Dabo Swinney -Kirby Smart -Mack Brown
But how many good coaches are out there - guys who are consistent and near the top of their sport?
Ryan Day/Harbaugh?
Lanning/Sarkisian/Kiffin/Riley?
Norvell? DeBoer? Elko? Deion?!?!? (Jimbo?!???!?!?!?!)
---
I guess my head goes to this: if Dabo left tomorrow and I couldn't have Saban, Smart, or Brown who would I want to lead the Tigers?
Leave yours below.

If Dabo left tomorrow I would go with:
Tony Elliott.
Sark as OC.

Mike Gundy is about as consistent as they get. I’d like to see him coach at a school that could recruit better. I’m not saying I’d necessarily want him as our coach if we had to choose another one, but I like how he defends his players and brings the intensity.

I think the coach/school matchup is similar to a pastor/congregation or marriage relationship. I may be a fantastic husband to MY wife, but would be a horrible match for another woman.
That being said, I think a lot of guys know what it takes to build a successful football program in a vacuum. But how to build/maintain one at a specific school takes finding THE guy. And as Jimbo (or Lou Holtz, or Steve Spurrier) shows... that's not something that necessarily travels.
So if Dabo retired tomorrow who would I want? No idea, because I don't know the coach that has a specific vision for how to keep Clemson football at the top.

How does Kyle Whittingham not get more love when these questions are asked? He consistently does more with less. The answer to that question was Kirk Ferentz a few years ago but he's been sliding for a while. I don't know if Whitt has a desire to move on from Utah but if any school could have any coach not from the "big 4" how is he not at the top or very close to the top of that list?

My 1st choice would be Saban, and Mack Brown would never be a choice bc he has gotten really long in the tooth!!! I think that Jeff Scott would be a good choice also...

If Dabo were to retire from Clemson today my 1st pick to replace him would be Dan Lanning under the condition that Wes Goodwin stayed on as D coordinator

I don't think anyone can replicate what Dabo has done.
Tony Elliot and Jeff Scott wouldn't be the answers.
Offer Venables and hope he would come back because he'd be the closest.
Otherwise, I'd be looking for an experienced offensive coach with head coaching experience who would keep the defensive staff.
I don't have any names, but it would have to be a personality fit.

Jamie Chadwell?

I don't know. Do we have to be realistic here? What conference are we in when this happens? If we're still in the ACC we could be at a huge disadvantage both in terms of money and attractiveness of the job since the ACC will essentially be a 2nd tier conference possibility equivalent to AAA baseball.

Chadwell has been a winner at every team he has coached. Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Coastal and now Liberty. I wouldn't have a problem giving him a shot. But also like Lanning, Clawson, Whittingham.

There are a lot of very good head coaches who will never sniff a natty due to where they are coaching. For example, I consider Dave Clawson an excellent HC who does more with less but at WF will never be in the playoffs. Paul Johnson from GT was an excellent HC but due to a lack of investment and academic requirements would never be in the playoffs. There are many, many other examples.
One other thought, if you switched Ryan Day and Dave Clawson, my money would be that Clawson would fare better at Ohio than Day would at WF.

You ask a great question.

That is why hiring a new HC is so hard. Folks who seem like they are "great" turn out to be not so great after all. Short term success does not lead to long term success all the time.
Elite coaches, those who have shown consistent high-level success over a decade or more: Saban, Dabo
Those who appear to be on the way to long term consistent high-level success: Smart, Day
Those who have had short term success and have shown the potential to become elite: Lanning, Norvell, Sarkesian, Elko, Kiffin, Deboer, Chadwell, Kleimann, Traylor, Fritz, and others I can't think of off the top of my head.
It is extremely hard to go from the third level to even the second level, much less the top level.

I agree with a few posters on Jeff Scott, knows and was raised up in the culture and loves Clemson Venables would be another. Possibly Riley, unless our offense really is flat again next year .

Hard pass on Jeff Scott

His HC record is 4-26. Sure that may be because of the situation he inherited, but it could also be because Jeff Scott isn't cut out to be a head coach. Alot of fantastic assistant coaches don't make good head coaches.
I'd rather hire a guy with a track record of success as a head coach, preferably at at least two different programs. I'd take Kalen Deboer, Lance Leipold, or Chris Kleiman in a heart beat before id take Jeff Scott (or Elliott).

Those coaches at North Dakota...South Dakota... North Dakota St......South Dakota St.... Montana.... Montana St.....those dudes are pretty consistent and don't get enough credit or opportunity in my opinion. They are raw as they get but they are battle tested because they're always in the mix for a championship in their league up there.
