177 - Mike Williams Pulled Down 177 Receptions for Clemson

Before Clemson:
Clemson superstar WR Mike Williams (2013-2016) was oh so close to going over to the Dark Side. Clearly, better judgment won the day at the very last minute. According to Sports Illustrated’s Clemson site, “Williams was a millisecond away from committing to South Carolina before a change of heart sent him to Clemson.” The article goes on to say:
Williams revealed that, up until the very last moment, he was going to commit to South Carolina. A last-second epiphany changed the course of his life and the Clemson program.
The story is incredible. Literally up until the very last second, Mike Williams and everyone close to him thought he was going to pick the Gamecocks and he grabbed the Clemson hat. Surely something went into that decision.
"I had got to commitment day and my high school coach had a long talk with me because he knew I was going to South Carolina and he wanted me to go to Clemson. He had a long talk with me before like we had to delay the [commitment]... He was talking about the quarterback situation. South Carolina didn't have like a really elite quarterback. Clemson got some guys coming in. Receivers, had to learn from Sammy [Watkins] and them. South Carolina didn't have nobody."
https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/mike-williams-shares-a-wild-story-on-how-he-committed-to-clemson
Williams, being the special player that he is, sent a message to Clemson fans in January 2013. A couple of other highly rated WRs decommitted from Clemson (Demarcus Robinson and Ryan Jenkins). Williams tweeted out:
“Clemson Fans don’t stress over them decommits, you still have Mike Williams>”
https://www.tigernet.com/view/recruiting_update.do?id=9160
Amen! Mr. Williams. Clemson Nation is thrilled that Clemson go the right player all along!
While at Clemson:
Williams got off to a great start. He suffered a season-ending injury, however, in Game 1 of the 205 season. He then excelled to even greater heights in 2016. His stellar performances were critical to Clemson’s 2016 National Championship! CLemsonTigers.com described Williams accordingly:
Bounced back from a season-ending injury in the 2015 opener in a big way, finishing his career as one of Clemson’s most decorated wide receivers in history … turned professional with one year of eligibility remaining … in three seasons, compiled 177 receptions for 2,727 yards and 21 touchdowns in 1,871 snaps over 42 games (30 starts) in his career … exited Clemson ranked third in school history in receiving touchdowns, fourth in receiving yards and fifth in receptions.
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/mike-williams/
That last part seems worth repeating:
Exited Clemson ranked: - Third in school history in receiving touchdowns - Fourth in receiving yards and fifth in receptions
Interestingly, however, Mike Williams’ ClemsonTigers.com bio did not mention his generous, kind, and giving heart. While at Clemson, Williams even willingly gave piggyback rides to unfortunate and inferior species members for no charge.
Sports-Reference.com provides Williams’ stats:
2013: - 20 Receptions for 316 Yards (15.8 Average) - 3 Touchdowns
2014: - 57 Receptions for 1,030 yards (18.1 Average) - 6 Touchdowns
2015: Injured in Game 1 – then Redshirted - 2 Receptions for 20 yards (10.0 Average) - 1 Touchdown
2016: - 98 Receptions for 1,361 Yards (13.9 average) - 11 Touchdowns
Total (2013-2016): - 177 Receptions for 2,727 Yards (15.4 Average) - 21 Touchdowns
https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/mike-williams-17.html
After Clemson:
The LA Chargers selected Williams in the First Round of the 2017 NFL Draft with the 7th Overall Pick. In seven seasons with the Chargers, Williams has established himself among the NFL’s top receivers. Williams’ stats according to Pro-Football-Reference.com:
- 309 Receptions for 4,806 Yards (15.6 Average) - 31 Touchdowns - 10 Carries for 34 Yards (3.4 Yards) - 1 Rushing Touchdown
Great video of Mike Williams Clemson Highlights. The first highlight shows Williams’ generosity in giving the less fortunate those piggyback rides (as mentioned again): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IZ7BrABNlE

Thanks, Sabletiger! It is hard to imagine that he was "moments away" from becoming a Gamechicken.
So glad his better judgment took over!

South Carolina Highway 177 is a 7.82 mile two-lane rural state highway that starts on the south end at SC 9 in Wallace northeast of Cheraw and travels north to the North Carolina line and becomes NC 177 on the way to Hamlet, NC.
Back to schools. Winthrop is another interesting one. It was founded in 1886 in Columbia as Winthrop Training School for women teachers. After a couple of name changes, the school moved to Rock Hill in 1895. In 1920, it became Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women. After desegregation in 1964 and becoming coeducational in 1974, it became Winthrop College and in 1992 became Winthrop University. Winthrop has about 5,000 students on a 100 acre campus. The sports teams, the Eagles, compete in NCAA Division I in the Big South Conference. Notable alumni include Andie MacDowell, Desmond Pringle, Thomas James Reddy, and members of the band Emery.

I was one of the first men to enroll in Winthrop when the state allowed them to go coed in 1972. Also one of the first class of school psychologists to graduate after that Masters program was started in 1973. AND most likely the only one STILL working after 50 years.
Hate to correct you but it was 1972 when it went coed - I left in '74 after 2 years and 2 degrees.
