If Lawrence is what is billed to be, no way he will stay 5 years. Redshirt would be meaningless.

But if he won't get meaningful snaps in 2018 why would you not give him the option? No one thought CJ would stay 4 years but he did. Lots of things happen such as injuries etc. He might end up needing that extra year of meaningful play. Burning his redshirt on spotty playing time does him nor Clemson any good.

Simple solution ___post a poll on T-NET ( vote for the starting QB ) -- send the results to DABO -- problem solved and all TNETTERS will be happy^ -- well, almost all ?????

He enrolled early and will get his degree within 3 years much like DW4. At least imo (which means nothing ) that’s what I see happening. He’ll probably be here 3 years so does he play 2 years or 3 years.

Very good question, but being that this is his freshman year, and we don't have the same situation we had when DW4 was thrown into the mix and took over as starter. We had DW4 and Nick Schuessler as back ups to Cole Stoudt, and it wasn't any doubt who the next man up was. But with this group we have Hunter Johnson with two years in the system that can I believe, could work his way into any system in college FB and be a starter by mid season. So where does he stand in a system he has been in for two years and played in. I know that TL come in as the top rated HS QB, Has he passed Hunter Johnson already, if he has, maybe Hunter should look for another place to play QB bc, Brice has the most time left that he can play. I believe that if KB loses his job as starter, Hunter Johnson will be the next man up, he has the most experience and is considered to be a top quality college QB. I'll hang up and listen

With that said, dont burn a yr of his talent by redshirting him. He is a 3 and out guy, this talent doesn't come around every season or even every 10 yrs so why waste it!? Whether he wins starter or not play the kid some or he will find somewhere that will. That's my opinion even tho it holds no validity to the coaches, I'm just an armchair Dabo. Go Tigers!!!

That would be a huge slap up side his head if some one suggested he red shirt unless he were to get injured. He very well might transfer .Im confident red shirt isn’t in the equation.

If he redshirts, then he plays only 2 years before declaring for the NFL, why not at least work him into the offense. That's unless Hunter Johnson actually beats him out, which is highly unlikely. If Lawrence beats out Johnson, then QB depth could be a problem if you know what I mean.

A Tiger faithful frenzy is self imposed. DH threw out the question, it's up to us to frenzy or not. Redshirt is a HC decision, not the co-OC, and we all are likely to agree a RS is way too early to even consider. I understand we all have strong opinions of the QB depth chart, but only the coaches have objective data from practices and scrimmages. Their decision is proper and I support all-in.

Regardless what you think about him starting over KB, I think we can all agree that a redshirt would be almost meaningless. If he doesn’t win the starting job he can still get valuable playing time this year, and if somehow he misses a whole season in the future due to injury he can still use his redshirt, like Williams did when it was almost of foregone conclusion that he would be gone after the 2015 season.

Well none of us see practice so we depend on coach speak for what is going on. My best guess is that at the end of Spring Practice, Dabo will sit down with each of the 4. Go over their strengths and weaknesses and what they need to work on. At that point if he (TL) needs a redshirt, it will be discussed. Am sure it will be a joint decision.

I've heard Dabo say himself a while back, that red shirting top players didn't make sense any more bc they are so talent and much better coached in HS these days, that you had to get what you you could from them bc they would enter the NFL draft after 3 years. Now he was talking about those very talented players that come in, some of them could easily be a back up, or a starter as true freshman.

I like Cole and he did a good job but I don’t see him at the same caliber as the guys on staff now. Whose to say Deshaun wouldn’t have sat with KB,hJ, and CB in front of him. Just saying the Hill is definitely steeper for TL. I don’t think he RS but it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. Jamies Winston redshirted a year and won a natty and a Heisman trophy. It’s not a death sentence or anything. KB ain’t coming out unless he gets hurt.

I don't think TL redshirts, but it won't be because he is
Apr 2, 2018, 1:30 PM

the #1 recruit. Jameis Winston redshirted behind EJ Manuel, and he was a consensus top 20 player and #1 overall QB recruit. Max Browne redshirted at southern cal as well as a freshman as a consensus top ten player and #1 QB recruit... so, it's not unprecedented, and given that KB is a 5th year senior and HJ is a 3rd semester freshman, TL has a hill to climb to learn the playbook as well as KB and HJ... even so, I don't think that he redshirts but it won't be the end of the world for him nor Clemson if he does and/or leaves... if HJ beats TL out, then that just means that HJ is a beast at QB and we will be glad to have him!!

Why even post this, its a hypothetical at this point. We have 4 really talented QB's on campus right now, they are all starters on most other teams. We won't have 4 next year its only a matter of who stays and who goes... great that 4 players of this caliber want to play at Clemson.

Bc it's a long off season, and as humans, we need to say something even if it's wrong to get by, or forget we have a very talented QB's situation going into another Clemson Tiger FB championship season. Or we could just talk about baseball!!!

A much better chance of a planet killing comet slamming into the earth next week that Trevor Lawrence red-shirting. I don't know off hand writing this who authored this article, but I would be concerned about some fundamental lacking of overall knowledge in even thinking this is a possibility outside of some injury. I believe that Trevor will over take Bryant at some point his season, likely closer to the front of the season, but he will not be no less than #2. Thus who would suggest that you would red-shirt your #2 QB? Maybe better of positing that Hunter Johnson will be red-shirted, especially if Chase Brice passes him. I think we will see Hunter Johnson transferring after the 2018 season (maybe after spring?) should Chase Brice pass him.
It is likely Trevor Lawrence has the overall better skill set and tools of all the available QBs, but I haven't heard (or seen) enough of Chase Brice is all about. Bryant struggled in the past to consistently throw the ball beyond 5 or 10 yards.

I think that, and this is my own opinion, that Hunter or TL will be the starter before or on 10/27 @ FSU!!!

A&M will be a good view of who our QB will be, they're a rugged defense mediocrely coached by Jumbo but talented just as FSU was when he was there. If KB struggles I see us chewing on the reality that someone else is going to get the start. Same scenario as Alabama 2 years ago, Jalen was 3rd string and by game 2 he was the starter.

This is why I say by or during the FSU game actually. If Jimbo has A&M to where they can score a plenty when we play them, and if they have a defense, KB's career as a starter will possibly over in that game, and especially if we take a loss in that game. But I am hoping that our D will be good enough to stop any offense we play from scoring more the 3 TDs on us, and for us to do that, our D line will have to cause a bunch of confusion in their offensive back field that I believe we will be able to do!!!

I'm betting that is part of the conversation after every practice. How could they not talk about the engine that powers the offense that has to score point before they can win a game.
I haven't even thought about it. How could he be concerned about calling the plays if he doesn't know who will be running the plays that he will be calling. Yeah Right, I haven't even thought about it. Just tell the truth and say we haven't settled on the starter right now or, no body has beat KB out as of today!!!

Is HJ ahead of TL?
Apr 2, 2018, 4:08 PM
|
|
The only reason to redshirt TL is if HJ is better. This sets up HJ to be next in line, then TL after that with at least two years of eligibility. CB would likely transfer.
More likely is that TL is next and HJ transfers. CB could stay for a 5th year if we don't bring in someone better.

"the race at this point is too close to call"
So you are saying that the other 3 QBs are at the same level as KB right now? And two of them have never played one snap in a college game. And HJ played on a very limited basis.
Wake me up in September....

Reading this must be frustrating for our talented QBs

Just adds more reason to believe that the QB position is based on loyalty and where you fit in the pecking order.

One day he tells coach he is ready and a few days later he's going to redshirt? Heh, heh, heh.

“Too close to call” is bull crap, and Elliott knows it.

They say stuff like this every year because it is good for competition and it allows the coaches to continue to evaluate privately.
In their minds, KB is the starter and it will take a lot for that to change before our first game.
The coaches probably also have an idea who the second string guy is as well, but of course they won’t say it now.
It will be the same song and dance all spring and most of the summer. Coach speak 101, move along folks, nothing to see here...
