Current NIL & Portal

Is it just me or do some of you guys think the current NIL & Portal situation is just NOT sustainable? It is so out of control right now it's staggering. I kind of feel like CDS is playing the long game here with the portal. We have all seen the reports that Clemson is very much in the NIL game, but they aren't going to pay multiple millions for a portal player. I feel like CDS is biding his time to see when the NIL & Portal bubble bursts and there is a major overhaul coming.
Did anyone see Chip Kelly's idea on realignment and contracts? I kind of think he's on to something, but the powers that be won't have it because it would change ESPN and Fox's bottom line. Here's the link: https://footballscoop.com/news/ucla-coach-chip-kellys-radical-college-football-plan
I think CDS is going to fill needs when there is one, but will continue to recruit and develop players instead of buying a team and signing 15-20 players in the portal. Just my 2 cents.

Not really, and I say that only bc someone/anyone would have to be totally stoopid if they can't see how the gross amounts of money that is being thrown top to bottom of college sports and especially college FB, and the small city colleges (like Clemson) won't be able to sustain their selves as a competitor very much longer before it implodes around all colleges that don't have an equal opportunity to generate the same in NIL money that the big city schools that are surrounded with big businesses that are shoveling large amounts of cash into their local area colleges. The N I L is the straw that will break the camel's back so to speak without NIL rules that will put all colleges, big or small on equal footing regardless of the lack of big businesses in the areas like Clemson is in.
The most important lesson that the human race has learned throughout our existence, is that rules has made it easier for us all to exist regardless of our class without destroying one another, and it's rules that will allow all colleges in their class to compete in the NIL arena as one in their class, as in the power 5 class of colleges sports, that will soon move to be the power 4 class.
College sports has survived for over a hundred years only bc rules were put in place to govern college sports. And now the college sports that has lasted over a hundred years as we've known it is on a path of ruining what we have known only bc of the lack of rules to govern the NIL/Transfer Portal that will destroy the college sports that has existed and grown into high tech college sports over a century. Everything that moves forward and grows to be it's best, it has to be governed through the rules that has completely overlooked with adding the NIL and the transfer portal into college sports. They will have to fix it before it's completely broken beyond repair IMO!!!

Unless some crooked politicians change NIL collectives to be eligible for tax deductible donations it’s absolutely going to burst. Donors are only going be willing to throw these crazy sums of money at guys who turn out as a bust so many times before it comes crashing back to earth.
I think the new playoff structure will also change things because you no longer have to be perfect to have a shot at a championship. You’ll probably have 2 or even 3 loss teams getting in with the 12 team format

The only 3 loss teams getting into the playoffs will come from the SEC, and I wouldn't be shocked to see a 4 loss SEC team in the playoffs, let not ever forget that ESECPN will have their say with anything concerning college sports and the SEC. The SEC has and will always get the biggest portion of the money that ESECPN invest in college sports!!!

I agree. Lets all give everyone a little patience until this things works it self out.
But imagine if you paid your head coach $1M and had an extra $10M to pay players.

Things like the NIL/Portal just don't work itself out without somebody initiating the correct path for it to work!!!

Orange, you must be an attorney or a politician because you go on and on about how the Portal and NIL have killed football instead of giving even 1 actual example of what happened. If you actually watched college football games, you could see no difference in the game from past years. The game is the game and it always will be.

I think the current issue is more the challenge of these portal players wanting guaranteed playing time and Dabo being loyal to his current players so he is only offering them a chance to compete.
Dabo isn’t targeting the big “I want more NIL money” portal guys anyway, it is the guys who go to the portal because they want more playing time or more p5 exposure and we lose out because we don’t promise guaranteed playing time.
I don’t know how Dabo balances the need to attract players who want more playing time via the portal while also staying loyal to those on the current roster, it seems a no-win situation.

Unless Dabo is OK with throwing in 3 quarters of his yearly salary every year to pay for top portal guys, then we're not going to get any of those guys. And there isn't enough of BIG businesses in or around Clemson that is going to donate the type of money that the schools that are in the BIG business areas will have for paying the best player the most money!!!

I don't believe it's sustainable in its current iteration. As I've stated repeatedly, the money men will want a return on their investment, or they'll stop spending. There's 133 FBS teams, but at least 90 of them are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. If you look at just the deep pocket schools alone; Texas, aTm, USC, Bama, Ga, OSU, Oregon for example, no matter how much they spend on NIL to top players, only one team will win the Natty. aTm has already been bitten by buying a bunch of players that didn't gel as a team under a bad coach. Do you think those investors consider it money well spent? They are rich obviously, they are paying Jimbo $76m to NOT coach for them any longer. But will they be willing to continue to sustain that level of investment? I'd say no based off of the current 2024 Composite Rankings: https://247sports.com/Season/2024-Football/CompositeTeamRankings/
aTm is ranked 21st currently, below the coots, Ole Miss and Nebraska. That doesn't look like they are dumping as much into NIL as in the past. Maybe they are waiting to see what the new coaching staff can do with the top talent bought the last couple of years first.
Paying freshmen obscene amounts of money based on potential will stop too. It'll shift to pay for proven performance, which sadly means that tampering will get worse most likely. I still don't think in 5 years players will be getting the money they are now with the exception of truly elite players like Marvin Harrison Jr. The investors will have to ask themselves, is it really worth spending $20m+ on enough players to win a natty this year? (Guessing how much enough players to win would cost) The rich didn't get rich by throwing good money away on risky ventures. And even if their team wins a natty this year, the price to repeat will go up exponentially, and that is when they'll have to ask themselves, is it really worth the money? What are they getting in return other than seeing their team win?
