For me it’s Climpson Anything other pronunciation is bordering yankee talk.
I have no problem with people from other parts of the country saying it differently. They are not from here. Fowler and others can say it any way they want.

I have noticed it sounds some pronounce "Carolina" with three syllables real fast and without the "r" or "0" Ca-li-na. Seems like it's very prevalent in the eastern part of the Carolina's.

Clem-son. There is no "p" anywhere near it.

I once saw a Coot cartoon about the pronounciation. It had a farmer in his orange overalls, with the name "Clem" above him. Further down the cartoon was a goofy Mad Magazine Alfred E. Neuman type kid with a ball cap on with a Tiger Paw on it, with the caption "Clems's Son". Probably as close as anything to being the right way to say it.

Most of us do pronounce it ( correctly) with a slight hint of the P. Funny how this debate comes up so often😊

Like "Clem and his son", but there is going to be a subtle 'p' sound as a natural result of the transition between the nasal bilabial 'm' and the alveolar fricative 's'. The 'p' is not intentionally pronounced.

Rhymes with Simpson
Feb 26, 2024, 1:01 PM
|
|
I haven't researched this but I'd wager money that "Sim's son" became Simpson because of the natural "p" that the mouth forms from the "m", and "Clem's son" would be the same. "Clem" being a shortened version of Clement, a name taken by Pope's and thus used in Christendom.
Also, is there any other "-son" name in the English language where the "s" is pronounced with a "z" sound? Crimson is a color, not a name, but that is the only case I can think of and I think CFB announcers do it to Clemson from repetition of saying "Crimson tide".
