Local Clemson people are fighting this tooth and nail. The town council is like every other town council with the developers going to them and offering them sweet deals. “Scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”.
Clemson is growing too fast for the infrastructure and traffic issues to be addressed. But the developers and politicians see it as build now and address the other problems later.

You can either have "smart development" or "dumb development".
Capitalism favors neither.
When you build too fast and don't have the necessary infrastructure it creates permanent problems. That's dumb development.
Nothing says "I'm not very smart" quite like approving high-density housing in areas without the infrastructure to handle it.

Is that the little park...

on the cut-through road between College Avenue and Highway 123?
Not sure that area back up in there is large enough for a housing complex unless they totally eliminate the park.

The greedy bas***ds in quaint Davidson (College) NC

did the same thing basically what with couple commercial buildings on main street being too big for the area, jamming new apts & shopping strips and then having to build two of the European drive-around circles to cope with the increased growth & traffic.
Saying, the old title of “Village” for quaint Davidson is no longer a fact!

It is the cut through. Not sure of the proposed site boundaries.

little old Clemson

Not any more. My daughter is a junior and no matter when I up to see her is seems like I get stuck in a traffic jam. For someone who started visiting Clemson in the early 70s really it is a shocking change. I understand change happens but the infrastructure has nowhere near kept up with the growth and trying to jam now 26,000 students and all the other employees etc in a pretty small area is just a nightmare.

A few years ago we thought we wanted to live in Clemson

After a few visits, we decided that “near Clemson” was preferable. Moving around in Clemson is horrible, and will only get worse.
We actually made an offer on a house near Sardi’s, but got outbid in the COVID buying craze. Bought instead out in the country, and have thanked our lucky stars ever since. We are about 30 miles away, but I still wonder if our 35 minute drive from here might take less time to get to campus than it might have taken from in town.
And part of our reason for moving in the first place was to escape the crowds and traffic of Summerville/Charleston.

Project obviously has positives and negatives. I get why the local people wouldn't want it because of the infrastructure and traffic. At the same time, the school is growing so fast it needs more housing. I also wouldn't mind a new hotel and restaurant.

Look at Myrtle Beach if you want to see what developers and real estate agents can do. No offense to you Spud.

Yes, building more housing exerts downward pressure on housing prices. That's not really a bad thing unless you own one of the other buildings. I'm not familiar with this particular project, but I do like the idea of students being able to live closer to campus and not having to commute in or own a car at all if they don't want one.

I'm in favor. Clemson needs more affordable student housing within walking distance to campus. If they don't build vertical near campus, it will only add more cars on the roads. Walkers or drivers? And the university itself (like its peers) seems to be getting out of the housing business.

It is inevitable that developments like this will come. Wish the University had more on campus housing available, but it seems like most schools are getting out of the landlord business.
