but they've all under performed this season. Granted there were a lot of extenuating circumstances that contributed, but as bad as DJ, the receivers and the offense in general were this season, to me the D-line was the biggest disappointment.

That’s understandable, but his play has been so inconsistent, would be a great o-line to showcase his skills against.

If you take what Dabo said, his “inconsistency” was a choice. This was his Clowney year. Knew he was getting drafted high no matter what.

Once the first player opts out, more will follow this season and in the future, it is what it is, best of luck to Murphy in the NFL.

Lets just be honest, this is not the first game Myles has opted out of this year. Wish him well, hopefully he will not become one of those "Contract Year" players in the NFL.

I was just going to write that one aspect of the Clemson culture has been that we do not skip bowls. It was amazing that none of our players opted out of the Cheezit Bowl last year. I guess I can understand Murphy's decision, but I do not like it. The Orange Bowl may not be the playoffs, but it is a big deal, and Murphy should understand that.

None of our players opted out of the bowl game last year because we didn't have anyone with a perceived top spot locked up. We only had two players total drafted last year.

This. The only reason that we have had a culture of not opting out of bowls, is because we've ended every season since 2015 in the playoffs until last year, and last year we didn't have anybody that was going to get drafted in the 1st.

Don’t be ridiculous.
Myles Murphy has enough on film already and no NFL team is going to think less of him for not playing a bowl game outside the CFP. Additionally, this is a sign of the time and will continue to happen for guys heading to the combine. Why get a major injury or even a nagging injury a few months before the combine/draft.
Do I wish it was different? Sure, but business is business and Myle’s business is about to get really good.
I appreciate the fact he chose us and wish him well.

So, we are getting bled dry on the bottom end by unhappy players leaving for the portal, and now the top end players are not playing in bowl games. I'll guess we have to make due with the happy middle that want to play for Clemson. I think Dabo needs to do some serious tweaking to the program before next year. Something is wrong with the program.

Normally I would agree but the portal and NIL are not specific to Clemson.

Something seriously wrong with the program????

[ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson standout opts out of bowl game ] |

I don't know about that. This is a larger cultural problem that Clemson happens to not be exempt from . . . that is true. But it's a hard sell to suggest that it's a programatic problem with the Clemson culture specifically.
Frankly, I think Dabo's sort of between a rock and a hard place, here - he wants to try and preserve the culture of bringing in recruits that are well-vetted for his program's culture and then developing them, and so he doesn't want to use the portal as a plug-and-play goodie-bag, but yet, may have to use it out of sheer necessity - but then you loose some attachment to the program and stability due to that, too, so what do you do? I don't have all the answers, but it doe seem clear that the symptoms are not Clemson problems so much as broader cultural ones.

I agree with all of that with the exception of calling it a cultural “problem”.
I don’t see any moral issue with a player looking out for number one when it comes to playing time or money opportunities. Neither of those are without risk, but it should be their choice.
I may not like it, but I’m not going to get bent out of shape if a player opts out.

If you don't want to be a Clemson man and embrace the culture from the beginning, you should not get to come here. Period. I fully support Dabo's disdain of the transfer portal. We should not jump on that bandwagon.
Regarding everyone saying Murphy made a business decision considering he's going to the NFL...there are a lot of players who went to the NFL and played in their team's bowl game. It's supposed to be about the team. Insurance can be obtained to protect against the risk of injury which might negatively affect an NFL draft pick spot! That would be the proper business decision while staying true to your brothers on the team.

Then something is wrong with every program in the country. Every team has players entering the portal and pretty much every team that's played a non-CFP bowl game has had players opt out of the bowl game in the last few years.

I'm comparing Clemson to Clemson. Clemson has always stood head and shoulders above the crowd as far as the culture goes. Something has been amiss the past two years. Not even sure what it is.

We've stood above everyone else how exactly? Players opting out of bowl games is something pretty recent that mainly started after the Jaylon Smith injury in 2016. We were on a run of making CFP games during that time which is why it hasn't impacted us before. We got lucky last year, but we also didn't have any obvious high draft eligible players on our team last year.
We've literally had players leaving through the transfer portal since it started just as every other team has. Many teams are losing starters to the portal, at least Clemson has only been losing backup players to this point.

What he needed this season
Dec 13, 2022, 1:19 PM
|
|
MM needed one thing this year 2 other DE's on the depth chart that could produce consistently. The best thing that could have happened to MM was Xavier Thomas being healthy. If XT and KJ Henry were there to deliver, he would have had to produce to stay on the field. Period. Talent, ability and XT not being healthy kept him with the 1s. If XT had been healthy they could have parked his butt on the pine more.
If you could bottle the heart of the Will Shipleys and Hunter Renfros, and put it in the bodies of the MMs, you'd never lose a game.

I have often stated that if a player quits the team before the season is complete (including bowls) they should repay the university for the cost of his full ride scholarship (including room and board) for that year.

He played through the season though and even played an extra game in the ACC Championship. Championship games and bowl games are referred to as the postseason aren't they? Many teams out there failed to qualify for a bowl game and players on those teams had their season completed after 12 games. Do college players get extra education, and room and board whenever they help the team qualify for extra games?

I can't say I'm shocked. As others have said, he opted out months ago. He never lived up to his potential in my opinion. I don't see why he is rated so highly, but I wish him well. I hope he is successful not only in the NFL, but also in life.

Any player that opts out of any game should have to pay back that years tuition back to the school. I understand the concern of getting hurt. You quit on your team. Period.

Hey.....wait a minute.....this is not a "meaningless" bowl game. According to Coach Swinney, this is the playoffs?????!! Looks like Myles Murphy doesn't think so. Seriously, not sure how I feel about it...but in the end it's about business. This you man has to do what is in his best interest financially. He helped Clemson win 2 ACC titles in his time and never had any disciplinary issues, we know of, and represented the school positively. Go ahead young man and pursue your dreams.

What a shame. Never thought I’d see that from him.
What had happened to being a team player? Guess l
need to lower my expectations. Just so disappointed.

If we were going to lose a starter, he's the one to lose. I was so excited when he committed. Seemed like he'd be able to take a game over. He had a couple of those games early in his career, but always underperformed. And as others have said, he's been checked out all year. Probably our worst starting lineman? (Henry was much, much better. Ruke was #2. Bryan was distracted for understandable reasons, but had more big moments).
Well, I'd never draft him with a first round pick but I wish him the best.

I wish him the best. It does leave us a little thin at DE for the bowl game since Swint left. Good opportunity for KJ, Mascoll, and/or Williams to shine.

Not surprising. As a few have mentioned, we've been in the Playoffs for most of the past seven years so it's never been an issue. Not making the final 4 and and having a shot at being a high draft pick will give any college kid a reason to consider opting out. It was only a matter of time for it it happen to Clemson.

Disappointing but then that has sort of been his career hasn't it? He can be unstoppable at times when he wanted to be and then invisible just a quickly. We'll see if he has what it takes in the NFL where you have to play every play or you will be replaced and spit out of the system.

Pulled a Clowney this season. Could have put up monster stats. He was noticeably not mentioned very often when on the field.

can not believe these kids let their team mates/team/coaching staff/university/fans down by not playing in bowl games. very self centered person. I guess the almighty dollar wins again, distroying college football.
