Staley is a 4 star, ranked the 32nd best recover in his class.
The other WR some of you are raving about as evidence that “we’re back” is a 4 star and the #49 WR in his class.
These guys seem to be really good players, and could be among the best WRs we have ever had, but they do not seem to be the elite level WRs we got in the past - at least not on paper.
We have to sign them, then coach them up, and do all we can to keep them healthy and also put them in positions to succeed. I hope that happens, but let’s not count our chickens before they hatch.

I actually agree with Judge on this one. Yes he is talented but is he just an above average servacible WR or is he a game changer like we had with Watkins, renfrow, tee, mike, nuk?

Stop using HR as an example when discussing landing big time WR. On a paper HR was a 2* and no one wanted him. If we signed him today everyone would be exploding on message boards.
But I do agree we need to get back to landing the top 10 receivers. Or we just have to hope our coaches are evaluating the right talent and these guys will turn out to be really good.

We have had a lot of top 10 receivers.

All of these guys were top 10 receivers in their class according to 247Sports:
2011: Sammy Watkins, #4 receiver in his class Charone Peake, #5 receiver in his class
2012: Germone Hopper, #8 receiver in his class
2014: Artavis Scott, #8 receiver in his class
2015: Deon Cain, #2 receiver in his class
2017: Tee Higgins, #2 receiver in his class
2018: Derion Kendrick, #4 receiver in his class Justyn Ross, #7 receiver in his class
2019: Frank Ladson, #7 receiver in his class Joe Ngata, #9 receiver in his class
2022: Antonio Williams, #9 receiver in his class
We have also signed some highly touted receivers outside the top 10 the last few years, including EJ Williams (#13 WR in the class of 2020) and Beaux Collins (#12 receiver in the class of 2021).

Tee Higgins, Justin Ross, Sammy Watkins, Charone Peake, and I believe Ngata was a 5 * but was a bust. We definitely have landed a few in dabos time but we also landed quality 4* guys. We also hit on those guys. We’ve struggled to hit on our WRs lately.

We dont know at this point. Two things are hurting us at this point. NIL upfront payments to WRs are taking the elite guys and our lack of offensive production the last two years. We need a good year throwing the ball this year to get back in the game.

I guess we shouldn't have recruited/signed Nuk and Mike Will either...they definitely weren't elite level...SMH
Maybe you should be more concerned that your favorite Clemson coach can't keep his highest ranked recruits on the team past a year.

Just to counter that a bit, Taylor, Staley and Paylor are our top targets from the get go of this class, so if we can land 2 of 3 top rated WRs by our coaches, I think that speaks volumes. Especially with all the chatter of us missing our top targets in recent years, so we can’t complain about settling for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th options in recent years and then gripe about getting our top targeted skill players because we don’t think they are ranked high enough.

Nuk was an outstanding receiver for us.

I personally think Sammy was better, but there is no argument that Nuk is one of our best receivers ever.
Let's not act like he wasn't considered a good recruit though. Coming out of high school, he was a 4 star, top 30 WR in his class and had offers from ACC, SEC, and Big 10 schools.
I don't mind us offering players like that. The point is that it's lame for our fans to defend our recent WR recruiting by saying that our coaches are getting the guys they want most.
If our coaches consistently think WRs ranked outside the top 20 are the best in their recruiting class, or even the best for us, then they are not very good at evaluating players.
Finding a diamond in the rough on occasion is different than relying on those players for the bulk of our signees.
A much more likely scenario is that the elite WRs lately aren't considering us, despite our initial interest in them. Some of you need to acknowledge that, rather than trying to spin it as us not wanting them.

Staley has offers from UGA, Tenn, and Alabama as well. We offered him around the same time they did. I’ll trust the evaluations of all our staffs over websites, even if we have had some busts.
I’m not one of the ones arguing that we haven’t missed on our top guys in the last few years, but both Staley and Taylor were clearly early priorities by our staff this cycle. I do disagree with you coming in whining about where 247 has this kid ranked when he’s right around the same place as Nuk.

This is the price you pay when you have a QB that couldn't go to check downs and call audibles and a coordinator that couldn't trust the QB to read the field for the past 2-3 years. I am going back to essentially when Jeff Scott left. We weren't ranked in the top 50 in receiving yards for the past two years.

That would be a question for our coaches who evaluate the talent. But they were in fact our top of the board WRs and offers, I’m not a talent evaluator, I’ll leave that to the guy making 10+ million a year.

Alex Taylor is underrated, IMO. I believe he will rise in the rankings after he completes the camp circuits and puts together a great senior season. I think he eventually becomes a top 150 recruit.
Braylon Staley has the speed to be a difference maker for the offense since we do not have someone with that type of speed. Although I would prefer Mike Matthews, Staley would still be a nice pickup.

Anyone downplaying Staley in this thread…
It’s so ironic….
This board was awash with how did we miss on Jalin Hyatt!!??!!
Guess who else is all over Staley? Tennessee…
Staley is very much in the mold of Hyatt..
Skill players in the state of South Carolina are subject to being underrated when being compared to kids from programs in larger states…
I feel like our staff is being smart here and may have learned something from some errors..,
Smaller- quicker wr’s have been lacking from our offense …
Seems to be a clear recruiting effort to fix that…
