1948 and 1950. And he's in the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame. And Jerry Clower had a story about him.

No doubt. How is Fred Cone not on this list?
Of those that I have seen, ETN was the most explosive followed closely by Flowers and Spiller.
Most elusive were CJ and Allen.
Toughest were Priester, Davis, and Gore.
If I had to pick just one to start a team- give me CJ. He could do everything.

You think Etienne was more explosive than Spiller? Nah. CJ was MUCH MUCH faster and had so many long touchdowns. I think it was his senior year he had a touchdown over 50 yards against every team but the gamecocks, and in that game, he had a kickoff return that got called back for holding. During that season, teams literally started kicking out of bounds. They'd rather get the penalty and start at the 35 than risk him taking it back. That's explosiveness.
Etienne was a better pure running back. CJ was the greatest athlete Clemson ever had (and I think his signing was huge for our program since he was the #1 RB in the class and our first big recruiting win).

CJ May have had (emphasis on “may”) more top line speed, but it’s close. I think ETN has more acceleration than any running back I’ve seen since Barry Sanders.

Against Etienne.
Spiller is our best overall athlete, but not RB.

did "recency bias" put Shipley on this list?

I didn't see 4-5 of those.
In this offensive era Etienne or Spiller.......depending on what offensive philosophy you lean toward.
the game nowadays is so different it's difficult to give the "old legends" a look.

I did leave out Fred Cone. But Shipley has played good enough to have his name thrown in, no matter the over blown tiff between him an Spiller on Saturday.

If spiller and etienne were on the roster today, Shipley never sees the field when it matters. That alone takes him out of the conversation.

I don't have an opinion for those before the year 2000, so with a 23 year history, CJ#28 is the only one that I continually held my breath each time he touched the ball thinking its going to the house. If I'm picking teams, CJ is my pick.

My opinion is Terry Allen is the best overall due to a combination of speed and power

But CJ Spiller and Travis Etienne had the best careers as running backs at Clemson. Terry Allen’s playing time was limited somewhat during his time at Clemson due to knee injuries, but he did go on to have a long NFL career also being the oldest RB in NFL history to have back to back 100 yard rushing games at the end of his NFL career. I remember his last game as a Tiger, the 45-0 blowout of the gamecocks in Columbia, he had 92 yards in the first half alone on an injured knee. He missed the 2nd half of that game and the Gator Bowl, then made the jump to the NFL.

My husband votes Fred Cone but I hold James Davis close to my heart. Husband notes that Frank Howard told a friend that Cone was our greatest RB ever.

That may be true, but Howard died before he ever saw Spiller or Etienne.

just my opinion and I'm a fan since early 80's
Terry Allen Raymond Priester Tracy Johnson (FB) good for a yard every time if you needed it. CJ Spiller James Davis Andre Ellington Wayne Gallman (underrated)
Travis Etienne - # 1 by a long shot IMO. Nice to be running back with Trevor Lawrence throwing to Tee Higgins/Justyn Ross/Hunter Renfrow to open up those holes but man could he run like a gazelle
