Probably the last group of Tigers I’ve enjoyed watching as much as this current group.
Great first half! Go Tigers.

Stan Rome started out as a 2 sport player in basketball and football, but I think he only played football a couple of years. He was good enough to get drafted and was with the Chiefs for a few years as a WR.

Fun to watch. Hard worker and great guy. I think he, like Tree, came back to finish his degree. I think he was HS All American in Football, Basketball and Track.

Love it, my days at Clemson. Remember Chubby Wells? He was an absolute hoot. Bobby Conrad was a friend of mine and I enjoyed watching him as well.

Chubby was awesome. Stan Rome had this quirk as a wr that he faked, then cut, rather than just cut. They couldn’t wash the high school out of him. He was chiseled from stone and a nice guy. Great hoops player.

I remember getting Tree Rollins autograph after a game when I was about 8. Came up to his knee cap. Kept that poster on my wall for years and years.

I saw both those guys play in HS. Rome was a two sport star at Valdosta High. Most folks expected him to play football in college.
Tree Rollins was a 7 footer when 7 footers were extremely rare just 50 miles north in Tifton, GA.
Little side note about Rome. (I was in college at Valdosta State when he signed with Clemson.) A couple of days after signing with Clemson he was driving a brand new Monte Carlo. His mother had an explanation. "When he was 12 years old I told him that if he got a scholarship to college I would buy him a new car. I've been stuffing money in my mattress. That's how I had the cash to pay for it. (That was in the early 70's. It was common practice for an athlete who got a big time scholarship to be driving a new car a few days later.)

I was in middle school nearby when he was coaching at Clemson in the mid 70s and I remember some of our minority students talking about a sort of frat house that was set up for partying and making it look like minority bliss to attract recruits. Some high schoolers from Daniel and the surrounding areas liked to check it out. Those were interesting times at Clemson to say the least.

Rollins was not a 7 ft spindle either. He was truly a tree.

Mid 70s Monte Carlo…..nice boat. The round headlight version at least.
That first year crowd had Skip Wise. He was from Dunbar HS. Smoothest guard I had every seen. Made ACC all conference as a freshman. Had he been able to stay, no telling what the Tigers might have an accomplished thru those years.

Dual sport star at Valdosta High. He was bigger than Stan. Pretty sure he played TE on the football team, but I'm not sure. I think he ended up playing Div 2 basketball. Been 50 years, don't remember. Heck, I can't even remember his name. But, I do remember Valdosta High beating Moultrie High (my alma mater) every year.

How about our only elite 8 squad. Larry Nance, Horace Wyatt, Billy Williams, John “Moose Campbell, Bobby Conrad, Chis Dodds, They were a great group to watch. And went further than any other Clemson team in history.

Coached by Bill Foster, whose 2 lovely daughters I went to high school with, they beat Utah State, BYU, and Lamar, then lost by 9 points to UCLA in the West Region final.
UCLA, who had a really fast guard named Rod Foster, made it to the final, losing to Louisville. So Clemson was 10 points from making the Final Four in their first ever NCAA tournament.

only one year to sign with the ABA will always leave us Clemson fans with one of the most tantalizing "What If's" ever.
His story is one of the most heartbreaking examples of drug use derailing a career and a life that you will ever find. Heroin washed him out of professional basketball in a matter of months. It also eventually landed him in federal prison.
