The "Thinning Of The Herd" 10/30 Edition

Oct 30, 2022, 7:03 AM

Year 5 of me doing my weekly public service to anybody out there who believes there will be more than 4 undefeated teams at the end of the year vying for a place in the College Football Playoffs. It won’t happen, despite each year worry and angst are abound with people wondering if we will have a decision to make among undefeated teams come playoff time.

The inevitable will happen….it’s called “the thinning of the herd” and I’ll post it each Sunday to help ease those of you that have this annual “fear”

Recap Of Last Week
The Herd was able to keep ahead of the chasers this past weekend, all keeping themselves in the thin air altitude of the unbeaten. The nooners provided some drama, but we turn the page to November still with 6 teams undefeated. But, the truth is simple. They remember November.

Next Week: Guaranteed Thinning Will Take Place
Tennessee travels to Athens in one of the biggest regular season games of the year. The team that wins all but punches their ticket to Atlanta for the SEC Championship. The team that loses joins those looking to be the prettiest one loss team in the land.

"Upset Alert”
Clemson travels to Notre Dame and the Irish seem to remember how to play football, thumping Syracuse in the Dome on Saturday. One could easily argue this will be Clemson’s biggest road game test of the regular season.

Michigan travels to a 4-4 Rutgers team looking to shock the Big 10 world. Michigan is better than Rutgers, but the Wolverines don’t blow people out and winning on the road at night is never easy.

Will Keep Winning....For Now
Ohio State travels to a very bad Northwestern team that has only 1 win on the season.

Texas Christian continues to impress, and will host Texas Tech this Saturday. TCU has too much offense to lose a game like this at home.

Final Thoughts:
When the sun comes up November 6th, there will only be 5 unbeaten teams, at the most. And there are 3 college football weekends in November AFTER next week before conference titles begin. So, if you thought the last weekend in October put a kink in my theory on Thinning The Herd taking care of any and all worries about more than 4 undefeated teams at the end of the year, do not worry yourself any more. The Herd will be caught. It is inevitable my friends.

About 1 loss sec and or big teams jumping an undefeated Clemson conference champion.

Michigan will end up losing to OSU and they will fall below us.

Georgia beats Bama in their championship game - and that puts Bama out.

That leaves us with Georgia, OSU, Clemson, and the fight between Tenn, TCU, Oregon, etc. I figure it is Tenn unless Georgia makes them look bad this weekend.

Not sure about putting Michigan on alert, Rutgers is bad….

Oct 30, 2022, 7:31 AM

Their wind are over BC, Wagner & Temple.
Only conference win over Indiana.
Close loss to Nebraska.
Obliterated by Ohio St, Iowa and Minnesota.

It would be upset of the century material.
Higher chance of TCU going down, IMO…Big 12 bottom feeders are tougher than the Big 10 ones.

Fair analysis.

Thanks…
In a couple of weeks, you’ll be able to include 1 loss teams in the herd thinning.
A few went down this weekend.
More to come for sure.

Good post. Right now, my thoughts are on one thing,

Oct 30, 2022, 8:03 AM

and one alone: our upcoming game against the Irish.

That plus whether or not I have enough candy for the little ghouls and goblins guaranteed to start beating on my door tonight and tomorrow night, Got panicky last year, as I was almost depleted when I saw another pack approaching and had to rush to cut off my frigging lights. Seemed like folks from all over the metro area were dropping off their kids in large groups.

Been in my house over 30 years and never any trick or treaters, long dark driveway in country setting must instill fear . Still buy candy though and have to finish it all myself.

Nothing for nothing but to your point about MI not doing blow outs, they beat IU by 21, Penn State by 24 and Mich St by 22.

There is nothing flash about Michigan, but they do grind teams into the dust and end up winning by sizeable margins.
