Travis pitched 4.1 scoreless innings. Not bad.

playing his best ball. Since early in the season, he has been throwing balls that look like batting practice pitches --- very hittable.

Then Tigernet will try to send him back to high school.

He’s just referring to the extreme overreactions one way or the other. One second he’s great the next people will say he’s awful. That’s how it goes

Probably not. He’s had some good outings. Today was great but he’s gotten roughed up too. He’s more mid innings work like today.
They’ve all had some great outings first half of the season... except for Owen. He’s more like Crawford was today. Not sure what’s going on with Crawford- he did great last year as our Saturday starter. I wonder if he’s not back to 100% after his injury earlier.
Holt Jones has been outstanding until a couple weeks ago and he’s had to sit with a sore shoulder. Since coming back, he hasn’t had his command and therefore can’t get guys into a 1-2 count and blow one by them with his heat.
Feel bad for Monte because he and Spiers have been good closers most of the year. This pen failure of the last month is a head scratcher.
Wish he’d give O’Neal and coker a couple shots to see what they can do.

Monte supporter here but I will say that two years ago Monte had a 6' 4" 230 pound pitcher on staff, Garrett Lovorn who sat all year with a couple exceptions. In the ACC series, Lovorn came in and shut down a good NC State team. After that, Monte said he should have used him more often. Lovorn did have control issues but could bring it. As fans we get to be Monday morning QBs but as bad as the pen has been why isnt everyone given a shot.

I’ve listened to every game and I don’t remember coker or O’Neal getting into the game... except for maybe one or two outs if that.

Everybody thinks it easy to close games. When you have an all american, folks still cannot believe he gives up a run here and there. When you over throw your guys, constantly...and they cannot go or be close to their best, it matters and affect games/outcomes. Folks also forget these guys threw all fall with no pressure and set an expectation of their capability...it only gets harder in season.

Totally agree with that. They were all fresh and ready to go in February and March. And it does matter what teams you’re facing too. Louisville and unc and uga aren’t really good hitting teams as opposed to tech and duke.
Both of those teams have good approach at the plate.

Marr is not a closer. Spiers is our closer, and he needs to be used as a closer not in the fifth or seventh inning. Andrew Coker needs a shot because he is a gamer. He may or may not be successful but he certainly deserves a chance rather than continuing to send some out there who have proven time and again they cannot get the job done. I understand this is big business and Monte has his clear favorites and is trying his best to run some off but it is stubborn to not at least give a scholarship player a chance to see if he can help a poor pitching situation.

Definitely agree. There was a poster on a couple weeks ago talking about hackenburg tweeted something that sounded like there was politics going on... who knows but the post suggested they were close friends with a players dad etc. again who knows- take it for what it’s worth but bottom line, see what the other guys have.
And quit using sharpe for anything other than a DH. He needs to concentrate on Friday pitching only. I wish he’d dh hackenburg some more. Get him some AB’s or let him catch more.

The term for using your closer in all high leverage situations is a "Fireman". Monty has done that every season since his arrival except last year. He wore Gilliam out early in 2017 and managed that better using Miller and Gilliam in 2018 for one of the best backends in the country. I think Holt should be your set up guy and Spiers closes the game. Getting through those first 7 innings should required throwing anyone who can get outs and not wet the bed.

I really think Monte should have left mat Clark in Saturday to see if he’d get us through 6 innings. When he brought jones in with two outs, Clemson had a 4-1 lead. Clark had only thrown 72 pitches. I would have liked to have seen him work out his own trouble. It wasn’t like Clark all of a sudden was getting walloped.
And I know he had limited guys but to go with Holt there with his first outing since coming off the injury was a gamble imo.

holt has not been injured. he has been one of our best out of the pen. he had a horrid day saturday but monte wanted the right on right matchup with their best hitter. ### more could he have done. last i checked monte can not predict the future. no way to know holt would not be on his game.
