A general football observation

And I certainly could be wrong ,(an probably am wrong), but are defenses getting way better at shutting down screen passes than in previous years? I heard a commentator say a couple of years ago that the screen has become the defacto run play. This might be why teams desire smaller backs these days due to their multipurpose abilities. But now it seems like defenses all over have learned to adapt for the screen and run.
Saturday is seemed like Notre Dames D (like many others) was ready for the screen pass every play and it generally is was not productive. I watched several other games this weekend and saw the same thing. Teams could run up the middle, but the screens to running backs were just not working.
Prolly just me. Or have others noticed this also?

I don’t know about other teams, but the screen doesn’t work very often for us.

We haven't had good blocking WRs since 2020. Grisham took over that year.

Generally I agree, especially for us, but

We had some success on Sat thanks to Sage Ennis getting a couple of key blocks. He missed one too, but you can’t bat 1000. I did notice that he was setting the block Saturday. Sage had a phenomenal game. His blocking was off the chain!

You run those screens to spread the D and keep them honest. If we can ever get consistent blocking on those, it can make the D pay for stacking the box so much. Then it opens up the run game more. So there is a reason to run screens and tunnel screens occasionally but we over use it IMO. Especially since we can’t seem to block for it. If I were Riley I would be so pissed at our crappy screen blocking! That probably why Sage Ennis was on the field a lot Saturday. That dude blocks!

Sometimes you have to go Chad on em.

You need a M Bryant type to take the top off the D, a C Peake type that blocks like a dozer and an A Scott type that gets upfield quick.

We haven't had a sideways pass be productive for quite awhile now.

Usually because it is not blocked well enough to spring our guy past that first defender.

Yeah, I saw a couple of teams on Saturday that made it work - but their WRs made locked up and pushed the DBs around. We should be able to teach ours to do that. It's not that hard.

Seems like everybody is running the wide screen - so defenses have practiced recognizing it quickly and attacking it.
My question is: Is the not some way to take advantage of the defense's attack and go long over the top ??

Seems like it has worked better with "Tyler from Greenville". He seems to be able to pick his way through the traffic.

A couple of things are needed to make a screen work.
1. QB has to not throw the ball into the dirt 5 feet in front of the receiver. DJU ruined many screen plays by throwing the ball in the dirt.
2. The not-targeted WRs absolutely must block at the line of scrimmage and downfield; tight end needs to pick up LB on that side, too. Our WRs have not blocked well, if at all, for the last few years.

The opposing Defenses by game time know our Offense as well as we do

They are ready for the one or two running plays in the game plan and the same screen passes. They know our tendencies and proceed accordingly. Too often Clemson blocking leaves the runner on their own, or the runner does not see any hole. To his credit, Mafah made some adjustments Saturday vs. Notre Dame which paid dividends.

Our blocking by WR still sucks.
If they won't block, screen plays aren't going to work.
The screen play is just about getting yards on a play, it also keeps the defense more honest and prevents certain blitzes that would result in a screen pass going for a big gain.
It's kind of like how the long touch down run by Mafah made Notre Dame change their defense.

Teams work on shutting it down because we overuse that play all the time!
