Wasn't that tournament the first games of the season each year?

Their students that traveled chanted "Let's Go Peay" all game. If I remember correctly, they were our 1st ever loss in the IPTAY Tournament. Go Tigers!

all the real fireworks used to come back when we sold our Home game to UNC

and played them in Charlotte in December instead.
What a laughable deal. Over his career, I think Dean Smith's winning % was actually higher in Charlotte than it was in Chapel Hill.
But there were oddities that did occur in Charlotte:
- Tates Locke pulling his team off the court in the 2nd half one year because he was so mad at the officials. You should have heard the Clemson radio announcers. Have no idea who they were, but they were incredulous. Couldn't believe Tates actually did it, even after UNC getting the "Smith treatment" all game. I think that was basically the end for Tates here; well, that and the NCAA infractions.
But hail, I sure loved him for it!
- It wasn't but a couple of years later, and still fresh in the memory of everyone, when Clemson somehow took an early lead on the Heels and held on to it into the 2nd half. Smith wasn't getting the calls that he was used to, and lo and behold, he actually got tossed. One of the few times in his career (maybe only twice, that and the Kansas Final game against Roy Williams) this happened. All the Clemson fans razzed Smith as he walked from the opposite end of the court to the tunnel. But he didn't leave straight away, and stood in the tunnel a bit. The Clemson fans' continued razzing alerted the refs of his presence, and they finally made him go all the way out. Too bad the Tarholes came back to win...
but still, we at least broke even that night!

I think Tates pulled the team after Dennis Yoder knocked Terrell Suit's teeth out on a charge that was never called, hard to believe how bad the officiating was in the old North-South double header.

I remember going to the early games. Believe I saw Tree’s first game in the Iptay tournament. Believe he was MVP for that tournament.
The Iptay tournament was different than the north /south tournament held in Charlotte.

I do. As I recall, in his 2nd game as head coach, with a comfortable 2nd half lead over Austin Peay, Bill Foster pulled a 5 player substitution. The new 5 were cold as ice, lead slipped away and we lost. Disliked Bill Foster from that game on. Glad when he left.
While it is a petty, small-minded memory, but it is about the only one I have of the IPTAY tourney. It was usually Clemson and 3 pip squeaks.
