Burns is good, but Clemson has struggled against Friday

Guys for a while now.
This lineup is great against everyones 2s and 3s but when we get an ace they really struggle.
That is concerning as far as postseason goes when everyone is emptying out the barrel on pitching right off the rip

Agree with both comments and yes we could struggle in the post season and I don’t believe we are dominate by any means in any aspect but who is really ?? I think we have a couple weaknesses but walks will beat you A LOT of times in baseball and that ultimately was the diff… pretty good pitching from our side to to hold them to 4 runs but it’s baseball , you run into guys that are on that night. With all that said this team is very capable of winning the whole thing I do believe that.. as inconsistent as we are in some areas we are also very capable of being two and done in a regional unfortunately. The beauty of baseball we will just have to see what team shows up when the lights on on when it matters. I for one think we will show up and make our way to Omaha and from there anything more is icing.

I don't think I'd go so far as to say we're capable of winning the whole thing. A regional, yes. Super regional, if we got pitted against a uc Irvine, Oklahoma, or even a Oregon St. But we won't, we'll draw a sec Kentucky, Tam, Tennessee. But games not played on paper. If we get some guys that get on a streak at the same time, we'll make some noise.
Realize wake has a weaker batting average than we do. Darden pitched a good game and that wind was brutal.

To be fair Burns is projected Number one in MLB draft and with a record of 9-1 and with a 2.8 ERA no one is hitting that guy. I won't hold that against our guys. Have they had trouble against bad pitchers? Yes. Tonight was not one of those nights.

I don’t think we’ve had trouble with bad pitchers. We pretty much hit everything except the elite arms imo

I went back over our schedule to see how we’ve fared against Friday starters. Since conference play began, we are 5-4 in the first games of series including the loss tonight. Definitely not characteristic of our overall record, but not surprising against the aces of these staffs. At least we’re over .500.
I agree that the first game of the regional is extremely important to win. Even weaker teams often have one good pitcher who can conceivably shut down good hitters. But we should be playing a four seed, and hopefully our offense will be up to the task.
Btw, I’m not a fan of saving our ace for game 2 as someone suggested in another thread. I know some coaches do that, but in a four team tournament, it is crucial that you win that first game. Let’s throw our ace against the four seed’s ace and get the win. If we get cute, we may run into a pitcher who has a career night and sends us to the loser’s bracket on the first night.

It’s great to have a lineup that can hit, but in the end it’s teams like LSU and Wake that ride elite pitching to Omaha. That 2-0 game between the LSU and Wake aces last year is what makes the CWS special. Also what frustrates me when we once had the likes Benson, Vining, and Koch and couldn’t get it done. Pitching like that doesn’t come around very often.

Outstanding pitching is greater than outstanding hitting. As the season progresses from here we will see more and more outstanding pitching. Catching up and scoring on that, plus delivering on the arms side in return protecting leads will determine our fate this season.
