Clemson softball. Some tough questions need to be asked

How can you play so poorly in your first game in the tournament? SE Louisiana looked liked the better coached team, the more seasoned team, the more motivated team, & quite frankly the more talented team. Clemson looked flat & like they were just going through the motions. Inexcusable . One telling stat. SE Louisiana was 6 of 13 hitting with runners on base. Clemson had only 6 hits the entire game. SE Louisiana had 13 total hits. Clemson looked poorly prepared to match their speed. Very bad loss in a season full of them.

With next year looking like a rebuilding year, I wonder if there might be serious discussion of moving on from Rittman & just have a completely clean slate for the program.
Been clear from the jump that something was amiss with this year's team. Ultimately, to go back-to-back Super Regionals (1 of which they went toe-to-toe w/ the 800 LB gorilla known as Oklahoma) to barely treading water means there's a disconnect somewhere between players/coaches.

IMHO she should have punted on this season long ago. Cagle does not need the grief. She's one of the top two or three athletes in Clemson history in any sport.

in general all season. I wouldn't say this team was poorly prepared for this game specifically though as that's not really how baseball / softball works.

The looked poorly prepared for SE Louisiana team speed. At least 4 of their hits were infield hits. Clemson infield played slow knowing that speed was SE Louisiana’s game. Some of those hits needed to be charged instead of sitting back and waiting on the ball. Then there needs to be a sense of urgency when making your infield throws. No doubt SE Louisiana’s team speed bothered Clemson greatly.

How do you know they were not the most talented team? Softball is all about pitching and beyond that, everyone looks equal.

Completely disagree. Have you seen how poorly Clemson’s infield has played this year. I do agree pitching is the key & matters the most. But, Clemson has lost games this year purely from poor play in the field. So the rest doesn’t look all the same. SE Louisiana had much better at bats than Clemson.

I coached the pitcher for SE La when they lived in SC. She was a good athlete in soccer and it translates into a great SB player. And even better family. Congrats to Ellie! She deserved the win.

You are completely right. She was good & earned the win. SE Louisiana was just better, but I did expect a better showing from the Tigers. So yea, it’s disappointing.

I love this softball team and think Rittman has done an excellent job. The truth is that many of the teams we have played have more talented players. When we have lost, it hasn't been because we were not trying or that players have not developed, but mostly because our players were not as talented. I think that was true against SW Louisiana. I think it was some degree of luck that we were able to initially attract some good players and now is the time we are going to have to start building on to what was started. I am not discouraged at all and think the future is bright.

Why are you surprised? We had an all American pitcher which we don't have anymore who was almost unhittable ... now we are full of average. Bats are still cold as ice too making other pitchers look like all Americans.

This is nothing new. These girls never got better at Clemson. There is no physical or mental development to speak of. It was fun because it was new and they came out hot to start the program. Now we are seeing we have no coach. Rittman is bad. No way around it

What are you basing your statement that Rittman is a bad coach?
Have you attended a practice, do you have access to the decisions being made in the dugout and do you know the real injury situation?
I think you just watch the games and then offer your assumption.

I don't think anyone thinks he is a bad coach. I think it has more to do with him being at Stanford a long time and coming to Clemson to start the program. He accomplished that in a successful way but some may be thinking more of a retirement situation. He is older after all. He will sooner than later and this could be a good time to let someone else take the reins.

The same idiots that think Dabo should go cuz the team didn’t make the playoffs this year. 12 wins aren’t good enough for them. This wasn’t the season we hoped for but, the women played their hearts out and made it their 4th straight regional. There are approximately 300 div 1 softball teams. 64 make the regionals. That is a great accomplishment by any measure.

Agree. Rittman is not a good coach. A senior laden team that looked completely unprepared and undeveloped. And mentally checked out (Cagle).
