Special Teams

When will we decide to focus on special teams. The following are huge weaknesses. 1. Cannot cover kick offs well. It seems like teams almost break returns every game. 2. No ability to kick the ball out of the ends zone on kick offs 3. Our kick off return team cannot return a kick off past the 25 yard line ( maybe we need to just let the ball roll into the ends zone and start on the 25.) 4. Absolutely no punt return treat. We either fair catch or let it roll down inside the 5 yard line.
With all that said I'm very proud of our team. I just think if we could improve on some of these, maybe wins would come much easier. I firmly believe with DW4 on our team we can beat anybody. He is that good.

Those two, during their separate times at Clemson, really spoiled us !

Agreed. An embarassing strategic weakness game after game.

Impacts field position every game. It's a complete clown show. I was the in the upper deck last night pulling for our guys and holding my breath every special teams play listening to many of our die-hard fans b1tch1ng about how bad we are on special teams. Not proud of it - just a fact.
Players have been told by coaches our objective on special teams is to keep it conservative and not mess up (fact). Game after game we are schooled by inferior athletes in every facet of special teams. Our all-hands-team of receivers, tight ends and RB's was not in for obvious on-sides kick - that is just a tip of the iceberg example.
Special teams should be a strength at Clemson with our super athletes. Stanford utilizes McCaffrey at every opportunity. Bottomline is we have the athletes and our special teams coaching is horrendous or non-existent. And yes, I am thrilled to see us back at the top, and it is amazing when we give up 10-30 yards on so many special team plays. Glass is way more than half-full but c'mon man!
Can we hire a legitimate special teams coach?

Great points. With the funds CU has I think it would be a great value to future Tiger teams to hire a real special teams coach.
DW4 can overcome a lot of our other weaknesses but some where along the line ST's could cost us a game. This is one area I wish Dabo would address.

Huh - our TEs can't block and our special teams suck all the way around. Wonder what those two have in common?
Pearman's punt return scheme is literally nonexistent. We don't rush the punter and we don't jam gunners at the line...really, it's 10 guys just running down the field while we bobble a fair catch.

With the extra time off I would expect special teams to addressed.

It's been an issue for years. It's an issue with Pearman and his scheme that's not changing over a month in the middle of the season.

We are almost dead last (out of 120 some teams) in ST EFF.

It's remarkable it hasn't cost us a game yet. The ONLY thing we've been good at is FG kicking and, ironically, that was a big concern coming into the season. Punting has been bad, coverage has been bad, returns have been nonexistent. We lose yardage on every kicking exchange.
And late in games we seem content to let teams start on the 35-40 yard line every time trying stupid squib kicks and pooch kickoffs.
