The best short yardage runner in Clemson history is.......

Tajh Boyd.
With Boyd taking the snaps it was amazing how frequently we converted 3rd and 4th and short with him even though we didn't have dominant OLines. We really didn't have many RBs with any size when he played QB so he was always used as our power back. We never did anything cute. We'd just run that QB power out of the shotgun up the middle. The fans, opposing players and coaches knew it was coming, but they still couldn't stop it. He'd get 2 to 3 yds practically every time. I don't know the official stats, but I'd bet he converted 80-90% of them.
I don't believe we've ever had a RB or FB as efficient as him in short yardage situations.

From when we used a fullback in the triple option. That was a power running game.

If he had run behind a good OL all 4 years, he would still be the leading rusher at Clemson.

He still is the leading rusher in yardage... I thought Davis had passed him.
In my research (after the fact), I noticed Priester was not even Top 10 in rushing TDs... that's crazy given all the carries and positive yardage he had. Goes to show what the HUNH offense has done for us the last 10-15 years.

Ray Matthews
Fred Cone
And as one who now qualifies as an old-timer, I always enjoyed watching Lester "The Rubber Duck" Brown
But watching James Davis, CJ Spiller and the Wayne Train has has been unsurpassed.

That's 94%. No other Clemson RB is touching that. A lot of the fullbacks being named somewhat had the element of surprise being apart of the triple option. You didn't necessarily know they were getting the ball. With Boyd there was no element of surprise. Everybody knew play was coming and he got the yards anyway.

Tajh gets my vote too. There were times his last 2 years where the offense knew he was going to run it, the defense knew he was going to run it, the entire stadium and the sportscasters all knew he was going to run it, and still nobody could stop him. It was like watching Emmitt Smith and the Cowboys in Smith's prime...you knew exactly what the play was going to be but stopping it was almost impossible anyway.

Every back named was a Clemson great. I do specifically remember Ray Yauger in his time he was a beast. Hardly ever did he go down on the first hit. I can see him coming to the side lines with blood running out of his helmet. He was tough and had what you call guts! He had remarkable stats for someone who never played on a winning team at Clemson from 68-70. Tracy Johnson and Chris Lancaster played together from 1985-1989. These guys ran like bulls. Chris had to give up football in 1989 as I remember due to a serious neck injury.

Harvey White, a QB in the late 1950's, was good at getting the short yardage first down. He was about 6'-2"- or 3" and about 200#. That was pretty good size for a QB at that time. He could fall forward and gain three yards.
