Early History:

Riggs Field has been with us for over a century! At one time, however, Riggs Field was much larger – and it was used for Clemson home football and baseball games as well! According to Upcountry Historical:

“Riggs Field as it stands today is the home for Clemson Men’s and Women’s Soccer. It is quite often known as ‘Historic’ Riggs Field, due to its history, but its history is often forgotten in-between other bits of Clemson history. Riggs Field was the birthplace of Clemson athletics. Before it became a soccer pitch, it was the home to both Clemson Football and Baseball.

What is Riggs Field today was only half of the original Riggs Field, that was 400 feet wide and 1000 feet long. What is now today’s Riggs Field was the football field when it was originally built. Where the tennis courts are now was were the baseball field was located. Other things, like a half-mile long track field was also constructed to surround the space, and tennis courts, were built on it. There was also extra space, enough for “three to four diamonds and as many gridirons”. Riggs Field was dedicated and named after Walter Riggs when it first opened ground in 1915. Riggs was President of Clemson College from 1909 to 1924, and was the football team’s first coach.

Clemson’s first football game on their new stadium happened shortly after it first opened in 1915, when they tied against Davidson 6-6. Clemson’s first baseball game was held in 1916, winning 4-2 against West Virginia Wesleyan College. Riggs Field provided great home field advantage for both the football and baseball team, both of them winning seventy percent of their games there.

In 1942, Clemson Football left Riggs Field to start playing at Clemson Memorial Stadium, were they still play today.

Clemson Baseball stayed at Riggs Field for around two decades and a half longer, moving to Doug Kingsmore Stadium (originally known as Beautiful Tiger Field) in 1970.”

Named for Walter Merrit Riggs, Clemson’s president from 1910-1924, and the University’s first football coach, Riggs Field has been a friendly home to various Clemson athletic teams, dating back to 1915. Clemson’s football team compiled a 57-17-6 record during its 27 years at Riggs Field, while the men’s soccer team’s current record here is an amazing 241-44-19 (.824). The Lady Tigers are 38-8-2 (.813) in their four years of existence. The baseball team won 70 percent of its games there when the baseball diamond was part of the complex.

Riggs Field is the sixth-oldest continuously used athletic field in the country. The first athletic event held there was a football game between Clemson and Davidson, which ended in a 6-6 tie on Oct. 2, 1915. Riggs Field hosted its first Clemson soccer match on Sept. 7, 1980, with the men's team defeating Old Dominion, 5-1.

The field is named for Dr. Walter M. Riggs, who was Clemson’s first football coach and later served as the school’s president for 13 years.

On Sept. 1, 1987, Clemson unveiled what may be the premier soccer stadium in the country at Riggs Field. The construction of a 6,500 seat grandstand provides top-notch accommodations for fans and players, and the revitalization of the bermuda grass field makes Riggs Field one of the nation’s finest.

Riggs Field served as the site of the NCAA soccer championships on December 5-6, 1987, the first time the championship game was contested on a campus site of one of the participating schools in the Final Four. A crowd of 8,332 witnessed Clemson win its second NCAA crown as the Tigers defeated San Diego State, 2-0. The attendance at this game was the largest to see a NCAA soccer championship game.

In 1988 and 1994, the ACC champion was determined at Riggs Field, as Clemson played host to the annual ACC Men’s soccer tournament in November. It was also the site of the 1996 women’s ACC Championship.

If you are like me, when you think of Riggs Field, you think of soccer. Riggs Field has been the home field for 16 ACC Champions and 4 National Champions. As noted above, one of those national championships occurred on Riggs Field when Clemson defeated San Diego St 2-0 in the title game.

115 - Tennessee Titans Select Coty Sensabaugh with Pick 115 in 2012 NFL Draft

Clemson DB Coty Sensabaugh (2007-2011) made huge strides each year at Clemson. That type of development then launched him to an extended NFL career.

In looking at excerpts from his bio on ClemsonTigers.com, Sensabaugh’s continuous development is obvious:

“Emerged as a pro prospect and the top defensive back on the team as a senior…had 87 tackles, two tackles for loss, four interceptions for 11 yards, two quarterback pressures, and 18 pass breakups in 1,550 snaps over 52 games (17 starts) in his career…had one interception in each of his four seasons.

2011:
Permanent team co-captain…had 40 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception, two quarterback pressures, and a team-high 13 pass breakups in 993 snaps over 14 games (14 starts); the 993 snaps set a school record for a defensive player…played 194 more snaps than any other Tiger defender…tied for fifth in the ACC in passes defended per game (1.0)

Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans selected Sensabaugh in the fourth round (115th overall) in the 2012 NFL Draft.

2012
On May 11, 2012, the Tennessee Titans signed Sensabaugh to a four-year, $2.5 million contract.

He made his professional regular-season debut in the Tennessee Titans' season-opening 13–34 loss to the New England Patriots. The following week, Sensabaugh recorded two combined tackles during a 10–38 loss at the San Diego Chargers in Week 2. On November 4, 2012, Sensabaugh received his first career start and collected four combined tackle as the Titans lost to the Chicago Bears, 20–51. He finished his rookie season with a total of 31 combined tackles (22 solo) and three pass deflections in three starts and 16 games.

2013

During the Titans' 16–9 season-opening victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Sensabaugh recorded a season-high five solo tackles and deflected a pass. The next week, he earned his first start of the season and recorded two combined tackles as the Titans lost, 24–30, to the Houston Texans.

On December 18, 2013, the Titans placed Sensabaugh on injured reserve due to a foot injury. He finished the 2013 season with a total of 32 combined tackles (26 solo) and six pass deflections while starting three games and appearing in 14.

2014

During the Tennessee Titans' season-opening 26–10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, he recorded a solo tackle and made his first career sack on Chiefs' quarterback Alex Smith. The following game, he earned his first start of the season and collected four solo tackles during a 10–26 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. On September 28, 2014, Sensabaugh recorded a season-high six solo tackles and a pass deflection as the Titans lost 17–41 to the Indianapolis Colts. He suffered a knee injury and was inactive for three games (Weeks 6-8) of the season. He finished the 2014 season with a total of 47 combined tackles (39 solo), a pass deflection, and one sack in 13 games and six starts.

2015

Sensabaugh started the Tennessee Titans season-opening 42–14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and finished with a pass deflection and intercepted Jameis Winston's first career pass attempt, returning it for a 26-yard touchdown. This marked Sensabaugh's first career interception and first career touchdown. On October 18, 2015, he recorded three combined tackles and picked off Dolphin's quarterback Ryan Tannehill for his second interception of the season, as the Titans defeated the Dolphins 38–10. With the expanded playing time as a starter, 2015 marked Sensabaugh's best year as a pro, finishing the season with a career-high 60 combined tackles (44 solo), a career-high eight pass deflections, and a career-high two interceptions in 15 starts and 16 games.

Los Angeles Rams

On March 14, 2016, the Los Angeles Rams signed him to a three-year, $15 million contract with $6.5 million guaranteed.

Head coach Jeff Fisher named Sensabaugh the starting corner, opposite Trumaine Johnson to begin the regular season. He made his Los Angeles Ram's debut in their season-opening 0–28 loss at the San Francisco 49ers and accumulated a career-high nine solo tackles and forced the first fumble of his career. The following week, Sensabaugh was benched in favor of Troy Hill during a 9–3 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. With Trumaine Johnson solidified as the top cornerback, the return of E.J. Gaines, and Lamarcus Joyner playing as their starting nickel back, Sensabaugh was inactive for a Week 4 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

On October 8, 2016, he was cut by the Rams. During his short stint with the Rams, Sensabaugh earned $4.5 million for playing in three games. The Rams decided to cut him after it became apparent that there was no longer a role for him in their secondary.

New York Giants

On October 11, 2016, Sensabaugh was signed by the New York Giants.

On October 16, 2016, he made his New York Giants debut and made one tackle during a 27–23 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. He finished the 2016 with 25 combined tackles (22 solo) in 13 games and two starts.

The New York Giants finished with an 11-5 record and received a playoff berth. On January 8, 2017, Sensabaugh played in his first career playoff game and recorded six combined tackles, a pass deflection, and sacked Aaron Rodgers as the Giants were defeated by the Green Bay Packers 38–13 in the NFC Wildcard game.

Pittsburgh Steelers

On March 20, 2017, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Sensabaugh to a two-year, $2.6 million contract with a $425,000 signing bonus. He reunited with his former head coach at Tennessee, Mike Munchak, who was the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line coach.

He made his Steelers debut in their 21–18 season-opening victory over the Cleveland Browns. During a Week 3 overtime loss to the Chicago Bears, Sensabaugh recorded his first tackle as a member of the Steelers.

During a Week 11 matchup against Indianapolis Colts, Sensabaugh recorded three solo tackles after replacing Haden, who had left the Steelers' 20–17 victory with an apparent leg injury. It was later discovered that Haden had suffered a fractured fibula and would miss several games.

On November 16, 2017, Sensabaugh earned his first start as a member of the Steelers and made three combined tackles, deflected a pass, and intercepted a pass by Marcus Mariota, returning it for 32 yards. The Steelers went on to defeat Sensabaugh's former team, the Titans, 40–17 on Thursday Night Football. He finished the season playing in 14 games with four starts, recording 22 tackles, three passes defensed and one interception.

Denver Broncos

On October 8, 2019, Sensabaugh signed with the Denver Broncos. On November 13, 2019, Sensabaugh was waived by the Broncos.

Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins signed Sensabaugh on December 17, 2019. He was released on March 23, 2020.

- Who is your football mentor or inspiration?
I would say my biggest mentor is probably my cousin Gerald Sensabaugh. We grew up together. He played in the league for eight years. He retired from the Cowboys in 2013, so I would say him. He taught me how to become a better football player, a better man, I am going to be a father, how to be that, how to be a better husband. All around just how to be a better human being. We grew up together so just to see his maturation was big for me.

- Why do you play football?
I love it. It's something I grew up doing. I feel like it kept me out of a lot of trouble. It showed me the world. I met a ton of people that I will have relationships forever because of this game. It changed my life forever.

- What is your proudest football moment or memory?
Winning the ACC Championship at Clemson. We were the first team to do it since 1981. Obviously, now they won a few more ACC Championships and the National Championship.
