What does your dog do during severe thunderstorms?

With those thunderstorms last night I was wondering about other pups. I have two dogs, one is a Pit bull/lab mix that absolutely hates the thunder. We have special doggie Xanax for her for this purpose. Last night it was so bad we had to go to sleep w the dog in between us in bed with her panting and shaking. Until the meds finally made her pass out and I had her get down to her bed. My other dog is a golden retriever and she couldn’t care less about thunder, it doesn’t phase her at all, she was just sleeping like no worries.

I’ve had many other dogs in the past and some care a little others don’t at all and some act like the devil is coming to kill them.

a pill that works for her, I think it is trazadone. The other two couldn't care less unless it gets REALLY bad then they might sleep a little closer to my wife.

Yes, the pit mix takes trazodone and it works

Do you think they are watching us? Someone is watching us. I bet they are about to kill us, guns are pointed at our heads. Oh my God, please save me..."

Have a chocolate lab mix, thunderstorms and fireworks make him crazy

when he was younger, he would roam all over the house, then start to "dig" trying to escape. Would crate him, but on occasion would lose a nail with the digging the plastic liner. Now that he is older and can't move as well, just shakes and pants. Valium helps a little.

She used to be unphased until around 10 or so. I blame my mom's dog for teaching her to be scared, as that pup with hide under beds, #### in the corner, etc... Now my dog will shiver and want to be all in my lap.

Silly dogs

Have a male and female from the same litter.

Male becomes a quivering mess at the first hint of thunder, same with fireworks. He'll curl up in the kitchen by the sink if we're in that area, or go in the deepest hallway and cower in the dark.

Female doesn't even acknowledge it. In fact, she was sitting by the door last night asking to go out in the rain and thunder, probably because she got closer to a squirrel that afternoon than she's been in a while.

Also, funny story, I took a minute long video of her stalking this squirrel, standing dead still like a pointer on the other side of a tree from the clueless squirrel. Waited for the pounce, but the squirrel finally figured out what the little blinking red warning light in its peripheral was. Went to show the video to my wife last night, and...it was a picture. I thought I had put it on video, and I snapped a picture and stood there like an asshole holding my phone up at the dog/squirrel standoff for an extra minute.

passes. If it's after we're in bed, she retreats to the upstairs bathroom and does the same. That goes for fireworks occasions and gunshots. No drugs needed, but she won't budge out of her safe place until it's been quiet for 30 minutes to an hour. There's a neighbor up the road whose son is a gunsmith and they have a range on their property, so at least once a week he's shooting for a couple of hours. None of those things bother the cats at all.

in effort to get...somewhere. We kennel her if it MIGHT storm so she doesn't destroy everything. I made a plywood box she can crawl into in her kennel and hide. When it does storm she tries to dig out of the kennel from inside the box and it makes a crazy loud noise on the plastic liner.

Thundershirts don't help, nothing we have found helps all that much.

CBD gummies help a bit if we give them in advance (otherwise she won't eat it). LOUD white noise helps with minor storms.

We had a lab that did that years ago.

Calmest, most gentle dog I'd ever been around. Apparently we were gone, she was outside and freaked out during a popup thunderstorm. She ripped some of the siding off my house, then chewed up the back door molding of my neighbors house. Poor girl must have been scared out of her mind. Came home to her shaking on teh back porch with a bloody mouth and paws.
