Where we've been - Where we are - Where to go from here

Nov 6, 2022, 12:22 PM

Just gonna put some thoughts down that have been rolling around for a few weeks, and even more so since last night...

1. First, I am not worried in the least about Wes Goodwin and the defense at this point. Our offense gave ND 21 points last night. Could we have played better on that end? Absolutely. However, there is only so much you can ask out of a D when the offense is performing the way we are right now. At this point in time, my concerns are 100% on the offensive side. I am good with Wes and Co.

2. When Dabo hired Chad Morris, we had average talent, were losing games, and were very bad schematically on offense. A change had to be made. After Chad left, Scott and Elliott continued what they learned from Morris, and evolved a few things on their own. Over time, however, the offense has regressed from a schematic standpoint. There is no question about this. It has lost a little every year since Scott left.

3. Flash forward to today... We are not losing games (not like before the Morris hire), we are immensely more talented than when Morris was hired, HOWEVER, the offense is in the same place in terms of how bad we are schematically. It is almost identical to where we were before Morris was hired.

4. What to do? I have always been a Streeter fan. I love when Clemson guys come back and help continue build our culture. I think that is awesome. HOWEVER, Dabo has a big decision to make at the end of the season. Schematically, we have regressed to where we were before Chad Morris. That is not debatable. I think Cade Klubnik has the same stuff that DW and TL did. The difference has been that he hasn't been able to grow this year due to not playing much. Right or wrong, that has put him behind where those guys were as freshmen. There has to be a schematic change at the end of the season... period. If we are what we are b/c of what DJ can do, that's a problem. We need to go back to tempo, pushing the ball down the field, and finding multiple ways to get the ball to Shipley, Mafah, AW, and Randall. We have the talent. What will Dabo do? This is going to be really, really interesting.

5. I don't see how you don't go to Cade at this point to finish out the season. This carousel can't continue. We are Atlantic division champs. Give him the keys over the next 3 games. Turn him loose. Get him on the edge. Go tempo. Huge decision, but now is the time, IMO.

6. I think it's ridiculous to say we are out of the CFP race at this point. There is a ton of football left. TCU at Texas next week. Alabama is out. I guess it depends on how far we fall in CFP Rankings, but there are a lot of big games left, and we could find ourselves back in the top 4 quickly.

Agree on all 6.

First step is to make Cade the starter, give him the starter practice reps and open the passing playbook. This is really all Dabo can do in the short term. It may not work, but the alternative is to continue trying to grind out games against inferior opponents and then get our butt kicked again when we face a team that can match us physically. I think we can beat LOU, Miami and SCAR with DJ, but I think a team like UNC could embarrass us in the ACC championship game.

Coaching changes on offense will depend on how the rest of the season plays out.

one statement i disagree with......

"Coaching changes on offense will depend on how the rest of the season plays out."

75% of the season is over.........we've seen how it's played out.

First off why all of this praise for Chad Morris. Did he win a NC for Clemson ? That would be no.
In fact I would prefer trying to get back Jeff Scott if he is released from South Florida.
I do agree about giving Cade the ball over the next 3 games and beyond.
As to this notion that we are not out of the CFP's don't fool yourself. It will take a congressional hearing investigating both the CFP committee and the television influence of eSECpn to get Clemson back in the top 4 which is where you have to be to play beyond New Years Day.

That's because Dabo has gotten back to meddling with the offense and doing most of the playcalling, just like he did before he hired Morris and let him run the offense. Just my opinion from what I see on TV.
