I remember learning about the northern lights in third grade (or aurora borealis as the teach called it). And since then its always fascinated me. It’s been a life-long dream to see it in person. Awesome pics.

In 1999, I travelled to Alaska for Northern Edge 99 - winter military maneuvers - in March. When I got to Fairbanks, the temp was -23F. We did night missile launches at Ft Greely. We would have to drive there from Fairbanks, returning to Eilson AFB at 3 AM or so afterwards. We would stop to check out the Northern Lights - which are amazing. What we also experienced there was the sound. It is very similar to static electricity, and filled the air. I assume (yeah, I know I’m not supposed to do that, but I still do….) it was because we were only about 100 miles or so south of the Arctic Circle.

If you can get up there to see and experience ‘up close’, it’s DEFINITELY a bucket list item! And go in the dead of winter if you can.

Was able to see them all the way down in Newberry county. What’s crazy is the way they show up in pics my wife took. Better than the naked eye.

That's true. I saw streaks. And, the sky was a greenish tint overall. But the camera saw things I did not.
