Herbstreit on Clemson: "The best team if everybody is healthy" |
The College Football Playoff Committee on Tuesday chose Georgia (#1 seed), Alabama (#2 seed), Notre Dame (#3 seed) and Clemson (#4 seed) as the four teams projected in the upcoming playoff.
With these current seeds, No. 1 Georgia would face No. 4 Clemson in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit said that a healthy Clemson squad may end up being the best team in the country again. "I think the best team in my mind if everybody is healthy is Clemson," Herbstreit said. "I think if Kelly Bryant's ankle is healthy and it appears that it is and I know their defense has given up some points here lately, it's just my opinion, that when the dust settles Clemson is potentially going to end up being the best team again this year in the entire country. I know they are holding on to (No.) 4 with Oklahoma and TCU closing, but I think Clemson may be the best team." Clemson has ranked wins over No. 10 Auburn, No. 17 Virgina Tech and No. 23 North Carolina State in the rankings. The Tigers also have seven overall wins over P5 opponents. All of their wins besides Kent State have come from teams with a winning record (6) which is the most in the nation. The next team with the most wins over teams with a winning record is Notre Dame (5) and then USC (4). For all of those reasons, Clemson has the fourth-best strength of schedule in the nation. ESPN's FPI outlook on the rest of the season gives Clemson an 86% chance to beat Florida State, 100% chance to win over Citadel, and 83% chance to defeat the Gamecocks.
