Professional sport contracts are getting ridiculous. Who is going to pay for these deals, we are, through ticket prices and TV and satellite service.

Ain't no way Ohtani will be who he is now when he is 39-40 yrs old. Things will change for him by the time he is 36 at the latest. Whether is mounted injuries or just deteriorating body.

Maybe, maybe not. Scherzer and Verlander have been both elite pitchers to 39 and beyond. And Shohei famously takes care of his body with a meticulous diet and exercise routine, similar to how Tom Brady was maniacal about what he would eat.

Combine that with Jon Rahms 400 to 5 or 600 million deal to leave PGA to play in the Liv tour this past week. Over a billions for 2 athletes. what a time to be alive (sarcasm).

And they haven't even done the second surgery yet, what if they find something they are not expecting?
My bad, they HAVE done the surgery already. Still doesn't make him worth $70 million a year, even if they made him BIONIC!

A small number of players make most of the money in MLB

The median MLB salary in 2021 was "only" $1.15 million. There are 8 teams whose total payrolls are less than Ohtani's $70 million salary. He also makes another $40 million/year from endorsements.

The average MLB salary in 2021 was $4.17 million, but 50% of players made $1.15 million or less.

I think most of his salary will be deferred money down the line, so it will make the Dodgers able to afford more players to build around him now, but it also make what the Mets still pay Bobby Bonilla each look like chump change and a whole lot longer too.

It is most likely a structured contract. Like Bobby Bonilla’s, Chipper Jones and other who receive payments 30 or 40 years after they played their last game. In this case a $700 million contract may only cost $500 million maybe a little less.
But as long as fans show up or watch it on Dish etc they will keep handing out this big contracts.
My concern at this time is how interest rates for savings accounts are as high as 12%. Food prices are unbelievable. I bought my daughter a 2018 Honda Civic for about $23 K that same car now is listed at close to $50K.
I wonder if we are close to the breaking point. ???
