A bit of a story here - two less CFB fans

So the wife and I will be on Amelia Island between Christmas and NYD.
We said "ah.. maybe we should go to the Gator Bowl on Friday, and then go watch the Jags on Sunday". We are both big football fans.
Then we said "well, Clemson is not going to be able to field a defense, and Trev is hurt. So, actually, meh, let's save our money for something else and go walk on the beach. Who wants to watch millionaires play on Friday, and then another set of millionaires play on Sunday".
Granted, we're just two fans, but we're two normally loyal fans. And if we're finding better things to do than watch CU and Trev, then I imagine there will be lots of other CFB fans doing the same thing as the money and chaos only continues to increase. Somewhere in the future there will probably be an inflection point where a decrease in fan support will finally be felt financially by the schools and the suits, and once that happens, CFB will finally come to its senses and some level of stability will happen. But not before then.
Sure the top 15-20 or so teams aren't threatened, but CFB needs way more than 20 teams to be viable.

My love for Clemson is all that’s kept me engaged. Unplugged from pro sports several years ago and this was the first year that I’ve only watched/attended Clemson games. If this spiral continues, not sure how much longer I’ll care. I guess as long as CU stays competitive but who knows how long that may be. We’re never going to be able to buy our way to the top and that seems like that’s what it is becoming.

I know you said that as a semi-joke but I heard a talking head say the other day that in the future, College Football would be a 64 team league of big boys, divided into 4- 16 team divisions, an Apple Division and an Amazon Division, a Google Division and a Nike Division, so you could be correct.....Nike might very well win a NATY someday..

I don’t watch what comes before, between, or after.
I have no interest in Western Kentucky or Old Dominion or their transfers or their NIL but that game was fun to watch and I’m glad I didn’t miss it.

I fly 5 or 6 times a year across the country (sometimes 7 depending on the post season schedule) to see the Tigs play. I can 't imagine being that close and not going. As long as I can get myself there, I'm going to as many games as I can regardless of NIL or the portal.
GO TIGERS!!!

Football is the most popular sport in America and there are new fans created year by year that gain wealth. Maybe the older generation will start to drop off, but there is nothing that will slow the college football or NFL monster down in this country.

That was NASCAR's story 20 years ago.

The parallels to fans leaving NASCAR and the way they are beginning to leave college football are to real to ignore.
I still love everything Clemson and will continue to follow all of the sports teams but after following closely for decades I am beginning to lose interest in college football.
Go Tigers!!!

NASCAR ratings went down because it sucks, football and especially college football does not. Every year you get another x,### number of college football fans that get jobs and start paying for tickets for various teams. Don’t see the comparison to be honest, sorry!

NASCAR had the same thing. It lost its soul and grew a bit for a while.

Then it died.
Attendance is dropping. Ratings have increased. But that means the roots of support are being pulled up while more casual fans are tuning in. It shouldn’t take a genius to extrapolate that trajectory. The soul of the sport is eroding fast. And the casual fans tuning in will have less of a reason, in a few years, to tune in.

I think less fans go, because you can watch in on tv for basically free and it's expensive and time consuming to go.

Similar situation for us. Thought about driving down for the game but with the opt-outs and portal departures, decided that $1K would be better spent elsewhere. Will still watch the game on TV and pull for our Tigers but some of the shine is gone.

If the salaries were the determining factor as to what I watch and/or who I wouldn't watch much of anything. Watching PROFESSIONALS is just that. What do I care what they make? Do I watch golf as much as I used to? No, but the purses have nothing to do with it. I'm bored with it. This constant search for parity in sports has numbed it down (re: NASCAR). If everyone is special, then no one is. I swore off baseball after the last strike (90's?). But started watching again last year and even went to Truist to see the Braves. Had a great time. Albeit an expensive one.
As disappointed as I am with the current state college sports I'll still follow the Tigers and attend when it's feasible. I'll watch most of the bowl games, because that's just one of the things you do during the holiday season.
I don't live and breathe it. I'm not brooding for weeks should the Tigers lose. It's entertainment. And it's discretionary income.

Yeah but the bigger schools now are able to buy their way into contention which means their fans are more engaged than ever. If you think anybody cares about what the second tier and lower fans think about all of this you'd be mistaken.

So bet a hundred or more on the Tigers and Jags every week. That might motivate ya to watch. If ya lose just double up on the next game!

I see both sides but will say that the first Wednesday in February was like a holiday for me until the portal came along. I use to keep up with recruiting but now it doesn’t seem to matter. If we got a big time 5 star you knew you would watch him for at least 3 years but now you don’t even know if they will make it to the first game.
