Anyone else wonder what we are doing at RB?
Dec 7, 2022, 7:09 PM

We are now down to one target on the board, a late offer. Last year we had 1 RB commit which was a late offer legacy. I’m a little concerned that we will not have high level talent the RB position in just 2 short years. We have the player of the year right here in SC at RB and haven’t offered. Why not?

Absolutely no one has ever brought this up before. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. It goes to the top of my concern list. I’ll fire off angry emails momentarily.

Because why would I be concerned when we have

2 studs with 2 years eligibility 2 years out?
We don't have enough carries for 3 quality backs or else Pace would have stuck around.
Freshmen play at RB all the time. When we need them, we'll get them, and possibly hit on a developmental guy in the mean time

You really think a RB depth of two players is good?

Who'd we have behind Travis for 2 years?

This is where the developmental guy comes in. We have no idea what Adams will bring. And we'll sign another developmental guy this year

We have 2 guys with 2 years left who are cemented

at the top of the depth chart? Why do you think Pace, a good back, left? We are not a RB centered offense. We're not going to pound it and divide 40 carries between our RB's.
So to expect a quality freshman to come in to sit 2 years behind guys getting 5 carries a gsme isnt happening. Our QB is getting 10 carries a game as well, as QB is the center of our offense.
When opportunity is there, just like the DL class this year with 4 guys leaving, we'll get a couple of highly rated RB's. Just like we did with Ship and Mafah when Travis left.
In the meantime, who knows if Adams can develop like Pace did? Or the kid from Bama we're likely to get. But until there is real opportunity, then there is no reason a highly rated RB would come here to play very little

I can’t remember his name but for 2024 Spiller is recruiting a RB from North Cobb in GA. I saw him play in the playoffs and he is fast and versatile

It's a big difference between the number of snaps a freshman will accept compared to a junior. There will be a decent chance that Shipley will be gone after next year, so maybe you need a bigger question mark with 2 more years.
Is it an immediate issue? No, but it is certainly a reason for concern. The idea of development is great, but the better the skill set and physical attributes, the more likely the young man will develop into a quality running back. Don't just assume that we can grab any 3* and turn them into the next Travis Etienne.

I don't see Ship leaving early
Dec 8, 2022, 6:51 AM

he's not a first rounder. ETN barely squeaked in the first round. He doesn't have top end speed. He still doesn't pass pro well. That will come, but his speed isn't gaining. He's a mid round pick and a likely NFL player, but why would he leave for that? His family is fine financially.
If anything, Mafah transfers out for His senior year, and that's just a chance of happening. But I fully expect us to sign a quality back next year when opportunity is nearer for them and 1-2 the following year when Ship leaves

@striperfan agreed. I’m hearing this before Pace left?? Coaches must feel neither Mafah or Shipley is leaving after year 3. At least that’s the way I’m reading into it. Both of those guys could use more carries per game imo.

Best chance after next year

is Mafah transfers for more carries his senior year. How likely, I don't know. Ship will be a 4 year guy. He won't leave early to be a mid round pick.
We'll sign at least 2, maybe 3, highly regarded RB's over the next 2 years as opportunity for PT grows nearer

If it weren’t for TNet I wouldn’t realize I wasn’t supposed to be enjoying the last decade of Clemson football. Thank God I now know I should be upset constantly. We’d have won 8 straight “nattys” if it weren’t for Dabo being such a dumb liar. Literally any other coach in the country would have hired better assistants and used the portal and never lost a game.

I thought the kid from Texas who ended up going to UGA late after we got involved and later tore his ACL in camp was going to be an Etienne type steal. His name escapes my old mind ATM. His film was very similar to Etienne’s film in that his speed looked like a man among boys.

He was a 4☆. The skill set required for a RB in our system is not a rare commodity, if we continue to bolster the OL and with the passing no longer handicapped we should be fine-

Best RB in the class. Reubens Owen. 247 has him headed to the Aggies.

Y’all do realize we have never really gotten HIGHLY sought after RB? Besides last year our offense hasn’t really been a super RB run heavy offense. Only reason we had to run everywhere last year was due to passing inefficiencies. Shipley is the highest rated RB recruit we’ve had in a while. With our typical talent at QB/WR we just need a guy with some speed to get to the edges and catch passes which is what I really don’t understand about Jarvis Green. Imo Green could sit behind Ship/Mafah for a year then have a chance to be an ETN type he might even be a little better catching the ball out of the back field then ETN who struggled at the beginning. Definitely wish we haven’t whiffed as much as we have recently and really wanted Chris Johnson to come. That being said coaching wise I think Spiller has coached his room up better then any other offensive position coach.

While I am perplexed at the whiffs, I agree with u that the group as a whole seems to be productive and well coached.

I also recall that when CJ took over RBs and Lynn J bolted, TE commented that he and CJ had very different coaching styles. His style may translate great on the field but not so much in the home. IDK…

Shipley was a 4/5* and Mafah was a 4*. At this point I would settle for a guy with at least 1 other P5 offer.
