A lot of people here tend to recommend Hyman’s.

If you’re wanting a mid-tier seafood place it’s good. I can acknowledge that it’s a Charleston institution. But if you want really good seafood, there are definitely better options.
Acme Lowcountry Kitchen is very good. Go for brunch if you can.
I haven’t tried Queology but have heard good things. I’m sure the barbecue aficionados here will have strong opinions about it one way or the other.

Hyman’s is a tourist trap type of place. They’ve seen better days, but they do what they do well…..imo….you can get better seafood at really any nice steak house of fine dining restaurant. If your looking for great seafood and you just want it fried…..fish camp in Summerville is a great spot…..that’s the beauty of this area…..you can stay out of downtown and still get amazing food..

That's a joke right? No one on here recommends Hymans except for you Judge. Plenty of great seafood joints around Charleston but that is not one. Hank's is right across the street and good.
Can't speak on acme or queology...never been to either. Dukes is my go to for bbq. Lewis' is good but expensive.

Best BBQ here is Home Team (they have several locations) and Swig and Swine on Savannah Hwy. I’ve not been to Acme. But another option in Pages on Coleman Blvd in Mt P which is close to Shem Creek.

I like Lewis BBQ as well as Rodney Scott's BBQ by a wide margin over Home Team as far as food. I used to like drinking beers at Home Team though and sitting at the bar watching games. The patio is nice too if you want to bring your dog.

Best BBQ in the area is Sweatman’s
Dec 12, 2022, 8:41 AM
|

Well worth the drive.
Never been impressed with Hone Team.
Scott’s in Hemingway is excellent but in Charleston it’s grossly overpriced and the only thing that’s truly good is the meat. The sides are mediocre at best and the place is really just a tourist trap.
Rodney is an old school pit master that does whole hog BBQ the traditional South Carolina way using coals from oak and burn barrels, etc. but he got caught up in the celebrity restaurant scene in Charleston and got heavily promoted by people like Anthony Bourdain, Sean Brock, John T. Edge and his Southern Foodways Alliance and the media largely because Rodney is black.
Don’t get me wrong. His meat is good. But the sides suck, grossly overpriced, and the place is always packed because of how it’s been overhyped by the media. But it’s nowhere near as good as Lewis or Swig and Swine.
If Rodney Scott were white, no one would care. Not being racist. I’m born and raised in the lowcountry and back in the 70s as a kid we used to do whole hog the old fashion way in a pit dug in the ground by the barn. I know my BBQ. I was raised in Sweatman’s and Duke’s out of Orangeburg.
When the restaurant scene in Charleston was really really hot in the media Scott became a media darling. The food media is extremely elite and snobbish and extremely liberal, and they loved that he was black. If you listen to these people there would be no southern culture and no southern food If it weren’t for black people and slavery, which is utterly ridiculous. Of course, these things are tightly woven and extremely nuanced and complex. But never underestimate the liberal medias’ ability to shape narratives, especially if they can make black people look great, and the south and white people look bad and of course racist.
Lewis is hands-down the best barbecue in the immediate Charleston area, especially when factoring in the sides. But if you want an old-school southern barbecue plate, especially traditional, lowcountry barbecue with rice and hash, drive up to Holly Hill and go to Sweatman’s. But only on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and only about eight months out of the year. Again, this is traditional South Carolina whole hog barbecue which means they’re only open on the weekends and closed during the summer because it all started basically with farmers doing this on the side as extra income.
Swig and Swine is also excellent and the ownership group includes Clemson alumni.
Next door is the Glass Onion, which isn’t technically a barbecue joint, but they do a braised pork belly that is out of this world!
If you want some #### good ribs ride around late in the afternoon or early evening Thursday through Saturday in the Cosgrove, Navy base, Park Circle area of North Charleston and find some of the black guys that have their smokers in a parking lot selling BBQ chicken and ribs. There is two or three of them but it’s hit or miss. They don’t have a fixed location or schedule.
If you want the best fried shrimp, flounder, deviled crab, etc. in the Charleston area go downtown to a little joint on the corner called Dave’s Carry-Out or on the edge of West Ashley on Hwy 17 South at an old gas station called Fishnet Seafood. Fishnet also has fried softshell crab. If you haven’t had that you haven’t had Lowcountry seafood! Dave’s and Fishnet do traditional Lowcountry fried seafood and blow the restaurants out the water. Both places are family owned and always busy as hell and both dirt cheap compared to the restaurants.

Haven’t been to Queology but Acme is fantastic. I will say though in the past decade it’s went from a hole in the wall with reasonable prices to a tourist destination with outrageous prices. But they’re just as packed so more power to em. Anytime we go to IOP we will visit Acme.

Should you go to Hyman's, get the whole fried flounder. It is tasty and you may not be able to eat it all. A good sized portion.

Hank's for a really nice dinner, Fleet Landing for seafood, Hyman's is touristy but still good food, Brown Dog Deli for lunch for fantastic, unique sandwiches, and Sabatino's for great NY pizza (carry out, not a great dine-in option).
Ton's of good places in Charleston, many I'm sure I've never been too or heard of.

A little over hyped in my opinion. For BBQ someone mentioned Home Team which is good as is Lewis's and Scott's. All 3 will not disappoint.
Seafood there are endless choices but one of them is not Hymans. It will all depend on what type of seafood you want and price.
Charleston and surrounding areas are full of great restaurants that will not disappoint. FYI For breakfast hit up Lost Dog cafe on Folly Beach. Get the Folly Benedict

I second lost dog on folly. Another go to is coast bar and grill off John street. As mentioned Hymans is a tourist trap. Food is above average but I know no one that lives here that goes to hymans.

Lets set some records straight here
Dec 12, 2022, 9:19 AM
|
|
worked for a bbq pitmaster and competition champ... they guy i worked with made the best pork butt, brisket, ribs, and whole hog bbq ive ever had and its not close... he slacked on his smoked birds though.
home team: bbq 6/10 but they do interesting things with it
melvins/bessinger family bbq: 7/10, legitimately well done bbq
sweatmans: 6/10 absolutely nostalgic experience with excellent hash and rice, but the bbq has been subpar for years since ownership or mgt change. standing by that statement, was last there in 2021.
dukes: 7/10 not going to go wrong with dukes
rodney scott: 8/10 very well done traditional style (i prefer dry rub bark to whole hog but wont complain here) but agree with aspects of above reply, sides dont match the meat in quality
lewis: 8/10 yes they are good. yes i prefer their meat to some other local venues. THIS IS NOT LOCAL BBQ. style is imported from texas.
swig and swine: 8-9/10 depending on they day, when their brisket is done right it is hard to beat. otherwise, solid venue that has replicated itself well.
guys posted on the corner of spruill and reynolds or upper king, 4-11/10, always an interesting experience, very much dependent on day and meat.
southern roots: 5/10 only go if youre pressed for time in old north charleston and you enjoy being dissapointed.
Poogans smokehouse: 8/10 only been once but was quite impressed
queology: dont know, havent been yet
there were several places that were amazing in their time: smoley oak, right on que, etc but are closed and lost to history.
for seafood: acme is solid, long island cafe is a hidden gem (iop), would suggest seewee restaurant. worth the drive. chubby fish downtown, berthas kitchen, bowens island. nobody native to chs likes hymans. ive been, not horrible as some make it out to be, but not in any rec list when people ask, the seafood scene is just too developed for a tourist trap like hymans and bubbe gump (rip)

Lewis is the truth if you like brisket. Been to Franklins in Austin - Lewis is on par
Pork is "ok" - green chile corn pudding is legit.
Seafood - just go to Bowens Island or The Wreck if on the Eastside.

Lewis then left and went to this other place in Austin and became their pit master. Franklin gets all the hype, but everywhere Lewis went in Austin won the awards.

Here’s the reality of food in the lowcountry
Dec 12, 2022, 11:10 AM
|
|
Pretty much anywhere in the Charleston area, including Edisto Beach, Summerville, even Moncks corner and goose creek, you can find good food these days. There are so many good places If you have bad food you’re just not gonna stay open very long.
When it comes to BBQ, most everybody has good meat. The truth is, it’s the sides that are hard to pull off. It’s hard to screw up meat. As long as you don’t overcook it, it’s going to be good. What makes Duke’s and Sweatman’s so good, and I’m not talking about Dukes on James Island, which is out of Walterboro, but traditional Dukes out of Orangeburg, is the rice and hash!
In fact, here’s my suggestion, if you want to put together a great barbecue meal for family and friends. Buy a quality piece of meat and smoke it yourself and cook your own rice, macaroni, etc. but buy the hash.
Go to this place in Jedburg called Winningham’s. They are a USDA certified slaughterhouse. But they also sell products retail. They make hands-down the best hash. And I am a hash snob, a hash aficionado! They sell their hash by the gallon. And it is the best hash you will ever eat.
Duke’s is very very good, Sweatman’s is excellent, but Winningham’s is phenomenal
Good hash is the single most difficult thing to make when it comes to BBQ. Especially if we’re talking traditional South Carolina whole hog barbecue.
And make no mistake. If you do your history you will find that whole hog barbecue started in South Carolina, not eastern North Carolina. The South Carolina lowcountry is the birthplace of BBQ in America. For whatever reason North Carolina gets all the hype. Probably because bigger cities more media. But it all started in the lowcountry. The Indians had the cooking method and the Spanish brought the hogs. Barbecue comes from the Spanish word barbacoa which means roasting meat over hot coals.
