When I was in Uncle Sam's Air Force and folks realized I was from SC, they would ask You ever been to sunset lodge? We played Georgetown in football and some of the older guys said they went there and partook. They have been known to lie.

You can’t be serious. The last time I went there it was incredibly run down. FYI - he said Germans because it is modeled after a Bavarian village.

Went there last summer and had a great time. Spent most of our time hiking around area waterfalls and just sitting in camp chairs in the creek relaxing. Didn’t go tubing because it looked like there were too many people on the water at once. Only walked around the “town” area once and then to eat - it is the same old tourist trap - but we found a place with good food and drink.

Instead of having the Ohio tourist experience in HH I would suggest Atlantic Beach. It’s across the causeway from Morehead City and Beaufort. All have great restaurants and a small town feel. Explore Fort Macon state park or take the ferry to Shackleford banks which is unspoiled and the lowest point of the outer banks. Maritime Museum or have lunch and watch the boats come and go.
For me a much better option

Just had a weekend at Tybee two weeks ago. Enjoyed Tybee but I will say River Street was kind of a letdown from what I remembered from 20 years ago.

I agree with Ocean Isle, NC. I live in Cherry Grove and we spend a lot of time in the Calabash area. Very close to all the restaurants in Little River and North Myrtle and a beach without all the tourists. Day trips to Wilmington and Myrtle which are both close by.

It may be a little longer of a drive, but Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, FL is a wonderful vacation destination. It would be worth the drive!

It does look beautiful there but I'm limiting myself to the Carolinas and Georgia. Reason being I have a vacation planned for Disney world in October and that's going to be a lot of cash.

Amelia Island is the place you need to go. It’s located the first Florida exit off 95 and it is peaceful relaxing and has plenty of good eating establishments. There is shopping too for the women or men. The beach is never crowded and there is historic stuff to see and do.

Beach? I enjoyed Folly last time we were there. It's close enough to Charleston to enjoy the food scene but still far enough away.
Mountains? It's hard to beat the weather in Cashiers/Highlands. It's a microclimate and the Temps rarely go above the 80s while we're roasting in the heat of summer. (As an added bonus, my route there rakes me through Clemson!)

When I was a Clemson student back in the early 60’s we used to go to Highlands in the winter and play Hockey on the frozen lakes with a flattened beer can! There was MUCH more developing pucks than there was skating! Ah to be twenty again.

I’m in Texas, but I’ve been to Charleston several times along with Folly Beach and loved both. The same with Highlands and I was there in the summer and winter both. I loved it.

Hilton Head could very well be your best choice. Easy beach access and plenty of restaurants of all types. Not much rift raft outside of Coligny Beach which isn’t even that bad at all, just local high schoolers hanging out.
If you were you young and single or even a young couple I would advise one of the Charleston beaches but for a family trip, HHI is a pretty good selection.
