J. Scott will go down as the biggest staff loss we've had

As hard as I thought it would be to replace Venables, I've recently discovered that Wes was really sort of the secret sauce to BV's success. I think we'll be fine at D-Coord. Elliot was solid, but his playcalling got stale and the RBs were by far the best offensive unit on the team with Spiller coaching them up even after Elliot moved to coach TEs. I think he's replaceable. People were wanting new blood at the OL coaching job. It'll be interesting to see if people appreciate Caldwell more once he's gone. Bates had the best group on the team. There's so much talent there, I don't think any new person could mess that group up even if they tried.
Since Jeff Scott left, our Offensive production has gotten worse and WR recruiting and production has taken a severe hit even if you factor in injuries. I think he was the most valuable guy of all the staffers we've lost in recent years.

This is facts! I've been wanting to post something like this but I get called a loser coot every time I post even though my blood has been orange since before I was born. I agree 100% I posted if Grisham was a good fit. I'm not concerned with his coaching ability, he's probably one of the better technical players to come through Clemson, however, can he land big recruits like Tee Higgins, Rodgers, Ross, ect.

I posted the same thing two weeks ago and got thumbed down for it. There’s not many on here who can have a debatable conversation about coaches and players.
If you’re not posting about Clemson rainbows and unicorns you are a coot per many on Tigernet.

I’ve been a Clemson fan my whole life, and posted here over 20,000 times since I joined in 2003, and I’ve been accused of hating the football program, Dabo, and even Clemson University. Recently I’ve been called a coot.
It’s amazing to me why people visit a message board if they aren’t able to read other opinions.

You sir are a lot of the reason people become disinterested and irritated. You are a keyboard warrior. All loud, obnoxious, chastising and such, deep from the safety of Internet nether regions. And yes you’ve spent a great portion of your life since 2003 proving this point. Keep floundering away. Message does not equal opinion but you may not understand that distinction. I am glad to see that you decided to pay to be the board genius, though.

One of the biggest issues I’ve seen is the lack WR talent in SC and surrounding states in the last few years. FL seems to have a decent amount. Scott was good in the state of FL. But yes if we need to do better with WR recruiting

Again, we had the most productive passing offense in Clemson history in Grisham's first year. In this 2nd year, we had the worst QB year since Kyle Parker under Billy Napier.
Go ahead, have a baseless opinion, but stop pretending it has a basis in anything.
Again, the only objective fact we have on it is Grisham leading the most productive receiving group in the history of Clemson football, and that was after losing Tee Higgins to the NFL and Justyn Ross to injury.

Well we now know he wasn't the heir head coach in waiting... he's had a pretty dismal record at USF... if he was so good that offense would be a powerhorse... and its not.
I like Jeff Scott but his record speaks for itself.
I like where we are.

about Jeff Scott & USF.
Even if he doesn't win a single game next year - he will be back.
But he's gonna win some games.
If he doesn't win a single game this year and he only wins one or 2 games the NEXT year, he will be back.
Write it down.
He's the guy, he's head coaching material, he's loved in Tampa . . . . if NIL doesn't kill everything but the big boys, he's gonna be a GREAT hire for the Bulls.
And he was a BIG loss for us and our staff - no doubt.

Jeff Scott was one of the best recruiters we've ever had at Clemson. I can remember many of our top players saying that he recruited them, also how great he was as both a person and recruiter.

It was not long ago early on in Jeff's tenure that the haters on this very board wanted Jeff fired because they claimed he did not know how to coach WRs. They were adamant is was not up to the job. Then Nuk, Sammy and all the rest arrived and not a peep was heard thereafter. Last year was a difficult year with a ton of moving pieces and most going in the wrong direction. Perhaps a little patience would be great to see if our WRs improve (and we dont have so many injuries).

You might be right, but he's still replaceable.
I agree with everything you said about our WR's, and there's no denying Jeff Scott was a great recruiter. But, great coaches don't stick around forever. Even for Dabo.
I might be ready to throw Grisham under the bus if everyone wasn't injured last year. While Jeff Scott may have been a "secret ingredient" with our offense's, he also wasn't calling plays for some reason.
This is Grisham's year to prove himself. It'll sort itself out, because I doubt Dabo is going to tolerate sloppy WR play forever.

I have basically said the same thing on here more than once, and I still say that JS was a huge loss to our WRs group, and WRs knew that. If he fails as a HC in Florida, I pray that Dabo will find a way to get him back to Clemson at any coaching spot, as long as his main job will be coaching, and recruiting our WRs!!!!

It’s an enigma to me why we haven’t recruited better wide receivers recently.
Jun 8, 2022, 8:39 AM
|
|
We have a great history recently of elite wide receivers, including multiple guys in the NFL. We’ve had elite five star QBs to throw them the ball. We’ve played in the playoffs almost every year. Our head coach was a former WR and WR coach.
Jeff Scott was obviously very important, but why the drop off in WR talent recently?

We have receivers who can't run routes consistently, can't catch consistently, and can't block consistently.
Our WRs were a significant reason why our offense was bad last year, and played a role in DJ missing some throws.
You can mention recruiting rankings if you like, but I've learned here that recruiting rankings aren't everything. The talent and skill level of our receivers has dropped off considerably in the last few years.

It's about identifying talent and developing that talent.
We have clearly not had the same caliber of receiver at "WRU" lately, based on their performance on the field.
Do you agree?

and “why the drop off in WR talent recently?”. I provided a list of the WR recruit rankings we’ve brought in going back to 2015 and asked which years you had concerns about. You have failed to answer. I don’t blame you, the numbers don’t support your claim. Maybe you meant production? If that’s what you meant, there are several reasons for the drop off. But according to the recruiting rankings, and more importantly our coach’s evaluations, there hasn’t been a drop off in recruiting. Now you’re back to answering a question with a question. Cool.

You’re arguing semantics as usual.

My point, which was clear to everyone else here, is that our wide receivers lately are not of the same caliber as they were a few years ago.
That could be due to recruiting misses, subpar development, poor work ethic on behalf of the players, or a combination of these.
To me, it does not seem that our current WRs are close in talent to elite WRs we have had such as Sammy Watkins, Mike Williams, etc. I don’t need recruiting rankings to tell me that.
Recruiting evaluations are sometimes wrong, which is what I’m going with at this point. Otherwise, we are saying that our coaches aren’t coaching well or our players aren’t playing hard. I don’t think either of those accusations is fair since our players are hard working guys by all indications, and our coaches have won national championships.

They looked promising, once developed. Sammy Watkins looked phenomenal his freshman year. Justyn Ross looked phenomenal as a freshman. And do you know what those two have in common that the Collins kids don't? Actual production. They performed as the top play makers on the team. Our play makers were our running backs predominantly all season. WRU is not the same, those of you who say otherwise haven't been watching the same teams I have.

We barely had a functional QB and ended with the worst

passing offense in the Swinney era. We were 103rd to be exact, one place AHEAD OF VANDERBILT.
Yet again, the year prior we had the most productive passing offense in the history or Clemson football in Grisham's first year. His second year we had obvious issues at the primary position on the field.
If we had Trevor Lawrence or even the 2020 DJ at QB we would have been right back as one of the leading offenses in the country and a likely playoff team.
Are you dense or do you just get your rocks off pretending to be dense? Either way, you lost this debate yesterday.

ignorance of the game, things that have been shot down numerous times, and then you make new crap up as you go.

Well when you have a DW4 and TL it makes the coaches look better . It all depends on the QB.
