Watson and the staff are way more in know so it doesn't do much good to go all in depth here on Tnet about it.
If you think a bunch of Clemson fans would laugh at you when you said it, then you probably shouldn't post it!
Ill TU but save us the medical preaching at this point.

I assumed everyone would be concerned about this kid's health as I am. Look, I respect our docs but it's not as though docs can't make mistakes.

We know. You're a pediatrician. I design knee braces and have masters in biomechanics and orthopedic engineering. If it was a complete tear no more damage to it can be done. You stabilize the knee and if he can play through it then he can play through it.

Obviously no more damage can be done to the ACL, we've covered that. Braces are not foolproof. There is still instability in the knee. Without the ACL, forces are transferred to the other ligaments in the knee, forcing them to do more stabilization then they normally require and risk injury to them. Would you like for me to cite my sources?

You are not correct. Don't talk to me about force distribution after knee injuries. Analyzing them is what I do on a daily basis. The brace significantly reduces the amount of stress placed on the knee. The braces are designed to reduce stress on the medial and lateral ligaments to prevent excess stress on them. It is literally how they are designed.
You aren't just transferring all the forces to other ligaments. Its significantly more complicated than that.
To clarify I'm not saying its impossible to further injure the knee. I'm saying that its not like he's significantly more likely to. You can always injure stuff more. The brace significantly reduces that possibility to a point that the team doctors (who know a hell of a lot more about the situation than you or I do) felt as though he was not being placed at greater risk by playing.

Exactly my point

Thank you. I never said that he is DEFINITELY going to injure himself more. I never said the brace doesn't help. It does REDUCE the amount of stress on the other ligaments, but it does not COMPLETELY remove the stress. The point remains, the stress is transferred to the other ligaments, not completely, but somewhat. I realize there are some guys that think it's OK to keep playing, but there are also docs who would completely recommend against playing with it as they do believe it can risk further injury. I work with some of them and have had these discussions with them. My entire point is that it makes me uneasy and I would rather play this conservatively. We don't NEED him to play in the bowl game. If some docs feel that it may risk injury, that's enough for me. Fair?

I misunderstood you. I thought you were talking about today. I don't give half a #### about the bowl game. After the loss to GT this season was about beating the coots. Get the kid in the OR Monday.

Without access to any of the medical facts other than torn ACL seems a bit much. I'm going to take people who specialize in sports medicine and probably have a few extra certifications on the wall over you.

Seriously York?

I've watched you question about every decision our coaches make on here all the time. Doctors are not immune to making poor decisions either. All I'm saying is I'm concerned. I'm not saying they made a rash decision, but I also don't think that necessarily means it is the appropriate one. And for the guys who keep saying I'm a pediatrician, yes, I've already covered that. I have said I do not have more expertise than our sports medicine physicians on this topic. But the fact remains I have studied anatomy and physiology in great depth and the facts I have presented remain the same. I know the guy designing the ortho brace would lead you to believe they are perfect in their ability to stabilize the knee, but it is just not the case. If it were, we would see guys doing this CONSTANTLY. And they don't. Oh, and he apparently also has an LCL strain so let's not act like he ONLY has this one issues with the ACL. Please stop acting like I'm and idiot for bringing this up. It's a legitimate concern. Are we still going to the Big 12 York?

I have played fball, soccer, and in year round tennis tourneys with a torn acl. my brace works fine and all I do is cut. my ortho doc told me I would be fine. besides the fact I rep ortho braces and most tigers wear my brand. I am absolutely certain the ORTHO docs know what they are doing

I love everyone responding to me as if I have no knowledge on this situation. Poor dumb ol' Pediatrician doesn't know nothing about knee injuries. I still have to know about knee injuries as many of my patients have them. Some of you may have had injuries and your personal doc said it's OK. Again, an elite athlete cutting in practice daily and playing major college football is different than you playing tennis. The forces are different. There have been others that have posted on here that their doc recommended surgery because they did think they risk further injury. Bottom line, not every ortho agrees on this. I work with multiple orthopaedic surgeons. I discuss my patients with them all the time. There is not a universal consensus on this.

ER doc here - I get WV tiger's concern - I'm not an orthopod either but I've met Poole and bowman, they seem to be good guys and I know they've got a ton of experience with this - obviously we don't see a lot of elite level athletes playing on torn Acls - probably not possible with basketball due to the cutting needed to be effective - but one game of pocket passing and a game plan of no QB sneaks is probably fine with the brace as long as he could take the pain and the swelling is down - I am sure that if there were career significant risks that Larry bowman would not let Watson play - he will get surgery because his skills will be affected without a functioning acl - docs definitely can make mistakes, nothing is zero risk and others may not be ok with letting him go but I think as always it's a shared decision with the patient and if our guys thought it was ok then I trust them - but maybe I'm just being naive. I'll run it by my friends at rush ortho here in Chicago (docs for the Bulls) and get back to yall

Today seemed like they tried to risk him as little as possible. But I feel like practicing for a month for a bowl and then playing in the bowl game could possibly risk further injury, and I just would rather play it safe with the kid. He's got a crazy bright future.
