From the 1980 Elite 8 team went on to win the NBA Dunk contest. I’m trying to remember where he went to HS, was it McDuffie? Or Westside HS in Anderson?

Yep... y'all missed a superstar by not seeing Larry Nance play. I am privileged to have seen so many legendary players while at Clemson in the early 80s. Basketball was at it's peak in my opinion.

I remember Nance blocking a Ralph Sampson jump shot.
Not sure that happened very often.

That 1980 team had a 6-10 across the board starting front line in Moose Campbell, Horace Whyatt, and Larry Nance. A great backcourt in Billy Williams and Bobby Conrad.

He played at McDuffie.
I attended Southwood Junior High(Anderson) with him and played two-on-two at lunch every day. My Buddy and I held our own but that was before his growing spurt.

Yep. It was the inaugral dunk contest. He sealed it bt dunking 2 balls at once. Don't believe it's been done since.

McDuffie. Played one-on-one with him. We were both 6'2" in the 10th grade. In the 11th I had grown to 6'4", and Larry to 6'5". In our senior year I was still at 6'4", but Larry had shot up to 6'9"!!

What was neat about the Larry Nance grow in stature and skill during his years at Clemson. Coach Bill Foster was actually going to let Nance go to Anderson Junior College and develop. When Foster had difficulty recruiting that year because of probation, Foster decided to sign Nance to a scholarship. Nance originally signed with AJC. It probably helped his decision that Nance had grown a couple more inches.
I can remember one game where, for the first time, Nance picked up his dribble at the top of the key, took one step and dunked the ball. Holy cow, was he going to be something.
