Portal hysteria versus actual facts.

Of the four teams in the CFB playoff, which have been - substantially - built through the Portal?
Penix at UW is a big time Portal player, but UW was mostly made into its current form through traditional recruiting and player development.
Alabama, Texas (does have Ewers), and Michigan - none are built with a majority of players from the Portal and most would have a hard time identifying 3 impact players on each team that they picked up through the Portal.
All three were built, for the most part, through traditional methods.

Their roster needs were reinforced with the portal. All of those schools have a handful of transfers that play critical roles to success. Just adding 5-10 portal players can really fill needs. We’re trying to play with a hand behind our backs. I know we’ve offered some, but I wonder how hard they’re trying to get these guys in an orange uniform.

Here you go:
Michigan has either 2 or 3 OL that transferred in and are starting or playing significant snaps. Plus they added Stewart from Coastal as a pass rusher.
Washington, last time I checked, had 18 transfers on the current roster. Penix, Dillon Johnson, Ja'Lynn Polk and Germie Bernard are all transfers and accounted for over 75 TDs and 7,000 yards THIS season. That's just on offense. I didn't even look at the defense.
Texas has transfers in Ewers, AD Mitchell, Ryan Watts, Jalen Catalon, Keilan Robinson and those are just the ones I picked out from name recognition.
Alabama has the fewest and probably the least impactful this season. However, the past transfers included Jermaine Burton, Eli Ricks, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams, Hentry To'oTo'o just to name a few people would recognize.
It's not building the entire roster via the portal. It's picking up pieces that you lost, didn't develop or injuries. Look at Michigan. How different is Clemson's season with a little more OL push and time for Cade? I know the TOs didn't help and those don't get erased but just a tweak here and there would make a big difference.

3 of 22 starters are transfers. That’s 14% which is significant.
Supplementing a good team with a few upgrades is the point here.

I posted a breakdown a couple days ago but it was also rejected. I listened to a Bama bowl preview yesterday. Think it came out on YouTube Tuesday. Anyway, Bama took 5 portal guys 23 cycle. But as the breakdown explained, Bama also picked up 4 juco players and the preview was pointing out what an impact that played this season.
Just because a portal transfer or a juco player isn't a household name like Evers doesn't mean they don't contribute. No one has ever said Dabo should go full-blown Deon or Norvell for that matter.

No worries. It's more the fans that have taken Dabo's stance too far in either direction. You've got the group that says the roster doesn't need any injections from the portal. The other group wants to hustle on down to Portal Town and pickup a case of transfers like Natural Light on a Friday night.
There's a group in the middle but they are much more quiet than the two extremes that are constantly yelling at the clouds.
Saban and Dabo WANT to build a roster around development. Both have largely been able to do that. The issue for Clemson is that for whatever reason, there's plenty to pick from (recruiting, coaching, players), specifically offensive production has declined over the last 4 years. While Austin didn't have an extensive resume, he put 4 of the 5 OL on the all conference team when he was at Ga St. It's not hard to see what Dabo was hoping to get out of Austin with the hire. It didn't work and he moved on. Dabo knows that if you are going to be a development program, you have to have development coaches. He went and got a really well known and respected one for the OL. Rumph brings a glimpse of what life in the NFL will look like for the DEs.
I've said it in other posts. I expect production across the board on offense to pick up. Both Spiller and Grisham are on the clock. It's ticking. I also wouldn't be shocked if Riley moves on, too, if things don't really come around next season.
Of course all of this depends what direction the NCAA and the conferences take over the next 18 months. Everything might look a lot different by the time all of this unfolds.

program changers. It’s simply not true. Most of them so nothing, ever. Actually most of them end up nowhere.
It’s like people think all these 2,000 portal kids end up starting and contributing to a teams extra success. That’s just not the case. Most of them do absolutely nothing.

Yes. Jermaine Burton (ALA) and Adonai Mitchell (Texas) lead their teams in receiving touchdowns, both having come from Georgia. Michigan has three defensive starters from the portal that earned All-Big Ten honors, plus an all-American center from Stanford. Washington has a strong lock down corner that came from Oklahoma State — he forced 3 turnovers against Oregon State. None of these teams went transfer crazy, but they undoubtedly benefited from grabbing some key guys at positions of need.

The key is having a portal guru (at least someone with a clue or experience) in using the portal. We do not, in title only for the past couple of years.

I agree. I get what you are getting at. I.E. much like the chrome helmet phase in college football; you do not have to join in to fit in. The same people were probably calling for Clemson chrome helmets too OP.
Georgia has been dominant in the sport and because he was a SP Stallion and Clemson Tiger; I only know about 1 transfer they have had to started for them. As you said, "they built their team via traditional means"!
Think about some of the players we lost in the portal for just a second to the Portal lovers! How many of them were game wreckers? Frank Ladson? Ajou Ajou? Nyles Pinckney? Mike Jones Jr? Taisun Pommachu? Mitchell Mayes(yet to be seen)? Vonta Bentley?
None of them. Chez Melusi was balling out until he got hurt at Wisconscin. DK did some good things at Georgia.
But, those are the exceptions portal lovers! The majority of the players in the portal just never developed into that game changer "they believe they are". They likely didn't see the field as much as they thought they should or are looking for NIL money not a good team to contribute to. It's not what people make it out to be. At all.

Funny you mention Georgia, and BTW, they have the #1 ranked recruiting class for 2024 right now too:
"As it stands, the Bulldogs have just two wide receiver commitments in the 2024 recruiting cycle. Even with some of the transfer portal losses, Georgia was going to be active in the portal at the wide receiver position. It was last year and came away with two contributors in Lovett and Rara Thomas.
Georgia has already contacted a handful of portal wide receivers. The biggest name to know right now would be Vanderbilt transfer London Humphreys. He’s one of the top players available in the portal, as he has three years of eligibility left. As a freshman at Vanderbilt, he caught 22 passes for 439 yards. One of his top highlights came against Georgia when he scored on a 49-yard touchdown.
The Bulldogs have already gotten Humphreys on campus, an encouraging sign for where the Bulldogs sit with Humphreys. Landing him would go a long way in easing any concerns about the talent coming into the program at the position.
Humphreys isn’t the only name to know at wide receiver for Georgia. Among the other options Georgia has been connected with include USC wide receiver Michael Jackson III, Ohio State’s Julian Fleming, Vanderbilt’s Will Sheppard and Miami’s Colbie Young. To date, only Humphreys has visited Georgia. Whether or not Georgia takes multiple wide receivers depends on the draft decisions of McConkey, Rosemy-Jacksaint and others. Georgia would much rather have McConkey for another year than take a swing at a one-year rental like Fleming or Sheppard.
The other position that Georgia has really targeted thus far has been the defensive line. The Bulldogs hold commitments from six defensive line prospects in the 2024 recruiting class, a clear sign Georgia wants to add beef at the position.
But the Bulldogs also know they’ll need players who are capable of playing right away. While there have been flashy names like LT Overton and Walter Nolen, both of Texas A&M, to enter the portal, the biggest name to know to this point is Xzavier McLeod. The South Carolina transfer was on campus this week, getting another look at the Georgia program. The Bulldogs just missed out on McLeod in the 2023 recruiting class.
McLeod redshirted this past season at South Carolina, meaning he’ll have four years of eligibility at his next school. That he comes from an SEC program in South Carolina and that Georgia recruited him hard as a high school prospect explains why the Bulldogs have quickly made a move for McLeod.
Wide receiver and defensive line were always going to be areas of need for Georgia in this cycle. A position of want for Georgia seems to be the running back position. Georgia is likely to lose Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards to the NFL. Branson Robinson, Andrew Paul and Roderick Robinson have all dealt with injury in their time at Georgia. While the Bulldogs hold commitments from three 4-star running backs, it’s not a guarantee that any of them emerge as instant contributors.
Which explains why the Bulldogs are interested in running back Trevor Etienne. Like Humphreys and McLeod, he comes from an SEC program as he spent his first two seasons at Florida. He ran for 753 yards and 8 touchdowns this past season. He would provide some much-desired juice to the Georgia running back room and give them a known entity.
Adding Etienne though could force one of Georgia’s other running backs to consider their options. It’s hard to imagine Georgia having seven scholarship running backs next season, so this becomes a position where Georgia could see further attrition.
Georgia still has a lot to sort out regarding its 2024 roster. To date, only Sedrick Van Pran has made his NFL draft plans known, as the Georgia center accepted a Senior Bowl invite. How the decisions of Carson Beck, McConkey, Javon Bullard and others will greatly impact what Georgia continues to do in the transfer portal."

I think Jeff Scott would be a great portal scout for us. I know he’s not looking to get into coaching but this is something he could do from his couch. He could objectively see the gaps in the roster and he knows what Dabo looks for in players.
But we know that won’t happen.

injured kid who had never completed more than six total games in a season at Indiana over FOUR seasons. Three as a freshman, out for the season with a torn ACL, redshirted. Six as a RS Freshman the next year, six as a sophomore, all seasons cut short due to injury. He would appear in five more games in 2021 for Indiana, throwing for only 4 TDs and 7 Ints. Not exactly the stuff of legend.
But, granted that Covid year of extra eligibility, and a change of venue to Washington, certainly turned his fortunes around. THERE is where he became Michael Penix, Jr, high draft pick, NOT a super grab from the Portal. Without Covid, the year he is having right now would never happen, he would have been done after last year.
He is one of MANY what I call "Covid Stars" at QB, and other positions. The NFL got a look at them in college that they would never normally have been afforded. Will they turn out to be good NFL players, or have they already hit their ceiling in college? It is an interesting question that only time will answer.
