What happened to ACC basketball?

Looking at today’s top 25 basketball rankings, you will find only one ACC team. What happened to the once premiere basketball conference? Serious question. It is even more perplexing when you consider the last 2 expansions brought in the likes of Louisville, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Pitt, etc.. All came in with a high basketball pedigree.

Wish I knew. Maybe lost some of the heated rivalry type games with such a large footprint.

Perhaps so. It’s a shame that we haven’t been able to take advantage of the drop off. I would love to see it re-emerge to the level of 10+ years ago. It was entertaining to watch any of the games.

the ACC isn't down some, but let's wait until after the NCAA tourney to determine how much.

&This 2006-2007 We only have one team of note and that was UNC. Maryland was 18th but they only jumped back up in the ranking in the last week. Five years earlier, you only had Duke and Maryland (17th). A couple of times in the early 90s, it was only Duke/UNC ranked. Before that you had various seasons with a two or so ranked teams (and one of those ranked terms might not even be .500 or barely .500 in conference.)
The ACC has always gone in spurts as far as having many teams ranked. The also sometimes-ranked also rans (Wake, Maryland, GT, NCSU) are not that consistant. It is only when UNC or Duke happens to be down (this case UNC) that it is more apparent. For every 1996/1997 you also have a 2006/2007

Idk but if there was ever a time for Clemson to push their basketball program to the next level it’s now. The ACC has never had a more level playing field. Get it done.

One and done, transfers, shoe companies, etc.
Same thing that ruined the entire sport.

Lack of a round robin type schedule and only playing teams once has diminished the rivalries and the value of each game.

Roy retired, Petino is gone, Boeheim is way over the hill, and K is in his final season. That's a major changing of the guard with four HOF-caliber coaches leaving (or needs to leave in Boeheim's case) in a short period of time. It's likely going to take those programs some time to adjust.
Also, and I mentioned this in another thread a few days ago, i think the SEC money is beginning to have an impact as well. They have extra money to burn now and can afford to spend it on basketball - which was never a priority for any SEC athletic department aside from Kentucky. There's now more competition for coaches and recruits in this part of the country.

Also, the two bellwether programs, Duke and UNC, are down. Just a few years ago both were battling for national championships.

Top teams can't buy all the top players. And even teams like NC St, Florida, etc that were not the blue bloods still got some shoe money.
Then add in the 1-&-Done. Teams like Duke don't have 4-5* Juniors or Seniors playing. Those blue blood teams used to have good players that matured few yrs and then they were dominant. Now the blue bloods play with basically a new batch of 5* freshman every year just trying to buy time to NBA. NIL might actually help college basketball just a little.

The ACC has been dropping for several+ years - but hidden due to Dukes and UVA success. Unfortunately- even with this huge deterioration in conference - Clemson has not moved forward. Some - one in particular- continues to speak about finishing in the top half of the ACC as an accomplishment to be proud of for our coach. In the 80’s - that would have been correct. Now it is not. The ACC basketball is now what the sec used to be with Kentucky. Now it is Duke and nobody else. The ACC claim to fame was basketball and Clemson and fsu in football. All that is left is Clemson. Baseball and soccer are strong - but secondary to the other 2. Concerned for ACC future.

NCAA put UNC on academic probation which in turn

required class attendance which lead to Swofford retiring followed by Roy quitting and the farewell tour of the Duke coach. Louisville ran off a coach with ethics, Boeheim is 107 and rest have pretty much been at the bottom forever, save UVA. That one is perplexing
Coincidence you say?
I think not

Always near or at top also. They had a couple of guys declare for draft they didn't expect last season. Very young but very talented. They have shown signs.

Growing up the ACC tourney was the place to be back when it was in the older Charlotte Coliseum. Go on a Friday and see 4 pretty darn good games.

You got a point...
Now, you have to start on a Tuesday to see the Shyatt participationt see Pitt vs ND or Wake and Cuse... (ignore)
Or the Wednesday Shaytt- Sorry, I won that one- round with VT vs ND or BC vs NC State.
Maybe go on to see the Oliver Purnell Tired Legs day for that 3rd game ND team take on a double bye Duke or a UNC play an overranked Miami.... or worse, see Clemson beat BC.
Finally you have the Friday games. OK. But most of the interesting fanbases Wake or NCSU have already been eliminated.
Then you have the final and No Brads Allowed Game on Saturday. Horray?
I mean, give the #1 seed a bye in the first round with 15 teams... but stop all the multiple bye games. Dilutes the early games.
Have a 15 Pitt play a #2Duke - THAT makes it fun.
Have the #6 team UNC play
Thurday Take 2018 1 UVA Bye 4 Clemson V GT 5 NCSU v BC 8 FSU vs Lousiville -------- 7 VT vs ND 6 UNC V Cuse 3 Miami v Wake 2 Duke v pitt
Friday Then based on that... 1 UVA vs Louisville 4 Clemson vs BC ----- ND vs Duke Miami vs UNC
Saturday 1 UVA vs Clemson 2 Duke vs UNC
Sunday UVA vs UNC

Yea its definitely lost the prestige it once had. I’m figuring ACC basketball in the 80’s and 90’s dominated the tv ratings. Heck I could care less about Duke/UNC game now a days but that was always a top 10 battle a few years ago.

It seems to have happened as fast as the "woke" society happened. Very sudden our basketball teams bottomed out. One day on top and the next ???

Happened under Commissioner Swaford’s watch. Other than Clemson, ACC football has become anemic.
