Each verse can be highlighted then opened in another window which contains links to comment from some of of history's most renowned scholars.

At the bottom of each chapter is Matthew Henry's comments on that chapter.

I understand some of the writings right away but these men who are quoted have a deeper and more accurate understanding.

That's a nice link. Commentary is great. I sometimes use the Hebrew equivalent here, but of course it's only for the OT. It's interesting to see the differences in interpretation when they occur.

I simply do not trust today's Hebrew Bible scholars...

to know what their ancient counterparts got from the Torah, Psalms and Prophets. I would spend more time arguing with myself about that than actually reading the scripture were I to access their comments.

God called them stiffnecked and they spent thousands of years now without knowing who was a Son of Aaron, a true Levite,' and if they haven't lost touch with God it's by His grace only.

It's not as if you didn't know I would say that. At times I wonder whether or not you're just to figure out how stiffnecked I can be. :)

Oh it's not just Hebrew disagreements today.

I've been reading the commentaries of Houses of Hillel and Shammai, the two dominant schools of Torah interpretation in Judaism in the 1st Century AD.

But who doesn't read Hillel and Shammai in their free time, ya know?

And these guys disagreed on everything. Even back then. Well, over 300 documented things. Including...

Does God want one to pray standing up or kneeling?
Can one divorce over trivial items or must they be severe?
Can anyone study the OT or just the specifically trained?
Can you eat bread baked by a Gentile?
What do you do is you forget to say grace before a meal?
Or forget to wash your hands?
Are white lies acceptable, or not. Like, can I tell an old lady she's beautiful if I don't believe it?

On and on and on.

Independent of whether either house is right or wrong, if there even is a right or wrong, the degree to which they try to understand and reason out what God wants is truly impressive.

I suppose if one's eternal life is dependent on "getting it right," these guys were determined leave no stone unturned. When I was over there 20+ years ago, I met a guy who was working on a telephone that one didn't have to dial on Saturdays. Because dialing was considered work. And there's no work on the Sabbath.

They just let their elevators run around the clock on Saturday, sort of like a vertical escalator with 30 sec pauses between floors...you just step in, and step out. All so you didn't have to push the buttons on Saturday.

It's amazing how the human mind works, and what one prioritizes as important, or not, and why. Who really knows how much of a stickler God might be? Maybe he's casual, or maybe he's a ball-buster. If he even is at all.

Nah, no tests involved. We're all just trying to figure it out, and I love all the interpretations.

Netflix has a 4 part mini series on the life of Moses.

I'm almost through the first part and it's surprisingly accurate. There's a handful of Jewish scholars who intermittently comment on the events during short breaks. They are surprisingly accurate and some of their comments are new to me.

It doesn't appear that they and I are reading different version of the Torah. That surprised me but it probably shouldn't have.

Jesus took the legalism out of The Law and whether it's believable or not I have faced almost all of those questions you listed which are points of contention among today's Hebrews.

Does God want one to pray standing up or kneeling?'
"Pray without ceasing...." TAP-The Apostle Paul

Can one divorce over trivial items or must they be severe?
"There's no such thing as a divorce after you say 'I do. Divorce in the Torah was defined as putting a woman away during the engagement if it was discovered that she was no longer a virgin and even that was discouraged by Christ.

Can anyone study the OT or just the specifically trained?
"One has to be specifically trained by God's Holy Spirit; knowledge, understanding and wisdom comes as God sees fit." ME!

Can you eat bread baked by a Gentile?
"If it smells good, eat it." That's an outrageous statement by me intended to exaggerate the point that God doesn't care what we eat as long as we are thankful to have it.

What do you do is you forget to say grace before a meal or forget to wash your hands?
"It's not what goes into our mouths which that defiles us but what comes out." SOG-Son of God

Are white lies acceptable, or not. Like, can I tell an old lady she's beautiful if I don't believe it?

"NO! There are many ways to compliment another without lying." CT88, for I'm a professional and natural liar. I probably lied to the doctor to make him stop slapping my fat little butt when popped out of mama.

"Let your yea be yea and..." TAP

Sin won't kill you. Justifying sin is what kills. That's really the only statement I've made which has any value for if we justify our sin in our minds we become numb toward God and He has to raise His voice to be heard. That's not where I want to be.

Thanks for that heads up. I'll check it out!

>Jesus took the legalism out of The Law

Something that has surprised me as I go through the OT for my End Time posts is how far back this idea goes. Jesus wasn't the first to preach it by a long shot.

There is a long, long history of various prophets taking the exact same stance and preaching the exact same message as Jesus. That is, "don't lose the message of the law by focusing on the letter." Be kind, help old men and ladies and young children, be compassionate, etc.

I used to work with an old Italian guy and he said "In Italy, whatever everyone does, that's what the law is." I don't know if that was true or not but it was pretty funny. As long as everyone is content and getting along, leave them be. One only needs the law when there is a disagreement between people.

In the case of the ancient Hebrews, however, they couldn't seem to get along for a single day without a disagreement of some sort, so it's understandable how they could fight about everything, including the very Law that was supposed to bring them peace.

You've made a lot of statements here, a sure voice of authority...

but you've never said anything so profound and hidden from the masses before; nothing as full of truth.

Thank you.
