Why is it, when they become a pro, they take whatever number given? But some in high school want a particular number…..even if that number has been retired?

They have leverage in college. You can always pick a different school, but you have to go where you get drafted to.

Everyone wants a low number because they think it looks cool. But if you look at the Cardinals roster basically every number from 0-40 is accounted for, so he probably just picked one in the 50s that he liked and maybe he'll change if another number comes open.
