Virginia State Route 106 is a 30 mile state highway that runs from the south end at US 460 in Petersburg to the north end at SR 249 in Talleysville, passing Prince George, Jordan Point, and Roxbury. Jordan Point is on the James River 30 miles upstream from Jamestown.

Jamestown, in the Colony of Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in America, located on the northeast bank of the James River about 2.5 miles southwest of modern Williamsburg. In May of 1607, three ships from the Virginia Company – the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery arrived at the settlement. It was chosen for having water on three sides (now an island), far enough inland for surprise Spanish attacks, water deep enough to tie off the ships, and interaction with the natives, the Powhatan Indians. By June, Fort James was built and the first president was chosen with six council members, including John Smith who got involved with Pocahontas, but she eventually married John Rolfe. 80% of the colonists died in the first three years from disease and starvation during the harsh winters, but with the help of the Powhatans, originally feared, teamwork made the dream work. The melting pot begins.

Been Jamestown years ago. One of my old Clemson roommates went to grad school at Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). It is right up the road on the York River.

My Dad had a place on the James River across from Jamestown.
We could see the Jamestown ferry from his porch.

106 - Minnesota Vikings Select Ashley Sheppard with Pick 106 of 1993 NFL Draft

Clemson LB Ashley Sheppard (1990-1992) was a monster of the football field. A big, powerful, athletic, and quick monster.

I am not sure, but I also think Clemson LB Ashley Sheppard might not be remembered and appreciated the way he should. Unlike any other post-1970 player I have looked up, I had a tough time finding Clemson stats for Ashley Sheppard.

We know he played LB. His outstanding level of play is recognized. For example: ClemsonTigers.com acknowledged his greatness among other great teammates:

“The 1991 squad only allowed 273.6 yards per game and 15.4 points per contest. The names of some of the defenders, Ed McDaniel, Rob Bodine, Levon Kirkland, Ashley Sheppard, Wayne Simmons and Brentson Buckner, are still remembered today.”

https://clemsontigers.com/1991-team-25-year-anniversary/

And, Upstate Today recognized Ashley Sheppard when his teammate Levon Kirkland was nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame:

“Kirkland was joined by several fellow Clemson football and basketball greats at the tournament in Seneca. One of those on hand was former Clemson linebacker Ashley Sheppard, who patrolled the middle of the Tigers’ defense with Kirkland in 1990 and 1991, and after watching him firsthand, Sheppard said Kirkland was more than deserving of the honor.

“I’m so proud of him, and Levon has worked very hard,” Sheppard said. “Just to watch him play and be a teammate of his, it’s huge. If anybody deserves it, it’s definitely Levon.”

https://upstatetoday.com/sports/college/kirkland-embracing-hall-of-fame-nomination/article_82b2e6bf-f160-59d5-8311-bcde91124ce3.html

The Greenville News added the following:

“Consider, too, that Kirkland played a Clemson position that had six players go high in the NFL draft in a three-year span. John Johnson was a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 1991, Chester McGlockton a first-round pick by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1992, Ed McDaniel a fifth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 1992, the late Wayne Simmons a first-round pick in 1993 and Ashley Sheppard a fourth-round pick by the Vikings that same year.

“Man, our third string was really good,” Kirkland said. “That was a unique situation, having so many players at one position. It was hard to make a tackle, let alone get a sack. We had to fight each other for tackles. But the beauty of it was that we were so unselfish. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. That helped me grow into the player I became with the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

A lot of stories mention Sheppard and recognize his greatness, but I cannot find his statistics anywhere. Any insight would certainly appreciated!

Visual proof Sheppard made plays for Clemson:

After Clemson:

Information on Ashley Sheppard after Clemson was a little easier to find. At his NFL Combine, Sheppard ran a sub-5 40 (his time was 4.89). Not bad for a guy who stood 6 feet 3 inches, weighed 258 pounds, and benched 225 pounds (19 reps).

https://nflcombineresults.com/playerpage.php?i=24337

Perhaps those Combine measurables were a plus. The Minnesota Vikings selected Ashley Sheppard with pick 106 (4th Round) in the 1993 NFL Draft. Wikipedia explains his pro football career as follows:

Minnesota Vikings
Sheppard was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 106th pick in the 1993 NFL Draft and signed with the team on July 17, 1993. He played in seventeen games for the Vikings from 1993 to 1994. He was released by the Vikings on August 27, 1995.

Jacksonville Jaguars
Sheppard signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 28, 1995. He played in two games for the Jaguars during the 1995 season. He was released by the Jaguars on September 18, 1995.

St. Louis Rams
Sheppard was signed by the St. Louis Rams on November 20, 1995. He was released by the Rams on December 6 and re-signed by the team on December 13, 1995. He played in two games for the Rams in 1995.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Sheppard

Ashley Sheppard also demonstrated his kindness to a former teammate in 2022. According to Tigernet:

Former Clemson athletes of the early 1990s, led by Ashley Sheppard and Wayne Buckingham, are rallying Clemson Nation through a Go-Fund-Me Page for former Clemson football letterman Rod Adams.

Adams has been on the heart transplant list for three-and-a-half years. On July 24, 2022, increased medical complications led to his admittance into Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

Adams’s medical issues have reached the point that he must remain in the hospital until a suitable heart becomes available for transplant. “We are seeking assistance to help offset the financial burdens of his heart difficulties, as well as all other required medication that he must take daily for the rest of his life,” said his wife Felicia Adams. “I am going to have to take a leave of absence from my work to care for him because his cardiologist said he is going to require 24-hour care for at least six weeks after a transplant.”

Rod and his wife have two children, daughter Felicia and son Sha’Rod.

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/news/clemson-legends-asking-for-help-for-tiger-in-need-of-a-heart-transplant-40868

I am not sure where things stand for Rod Adams and his medical urgent situation since the article was written in 2022. But prayers lifted for him and for his family.

And major kudos to Ashley Sheppard and to Wayne Buckingham. Clearly Clemson men through and through!

I believe we are in a much better place physically than we have been in a long time. UGA will be beat up when we are done with them this time, they aren’t expecting us to put up much of a fight.

Dabo has a way of winning the biggest of games late in the season as he peaks our Teams for the post season, he’ll start early this season, the spring ball game was to show UGA nothing.

My understanding is it was nothing like our practices and private scrimmages, we’ll open that can in the new Mercedes.

We’ll need to be ready for hitting hard and shocking the whole portal world!

Tigers upset Dawgs with a strong showing in their First game and move up in the rankings so UGA hardly drops.

We just need to continue the momentum and keep our faith throughout the season, Go Tiger’s 🐅🔥🔥🔥
